Leadership Announcement — Thirsk RUFC

Thirsk RUFC is proud to welcome Dan Thompson into the leadership group as Co‑Captain for the new season. Dan’s a firefighter — someone who lives and works in high‑pressure situations every single day. He brings calm under fire, strength when it matters, and a level of composure that lifts everyone around him. After 14 years at Thirsk, he knows exactly what this club stands for and what it takes to drive it forward.

Alongside him is Matt Mason, returning after a serious injury that kept him off the pitch last season. It was frustrating, painful, and one of the toughest challenges he’s faced — but he never stepped away. Matt coached, supported, and helped push the squad from the sidelines, proving that leadership isn’t just about playing… it’s about showing up. Now he’s back, ready to pull the shirt on again and lead from the front.

Together, Dan and Matt have built a new players’ spine to strengthen leadership on and off the pitch:

Thirsk RUFC is proud to announce Adam Richards as our new Junior Section Chairman — a role that will help shape the future of our players, coaches, and community.

Adam is a family man, a first‑team player, and a leader who works daily in a challenging school environment, creating spaces where young people can thrive. His roots in rugby run deep, and his passion for helping others grow is exactly what our junior section needs as we continue to build for the future.

🟢 A Message From Adam

“I’m excited to take on this new role. I want to create a supportive and positive environment for players and coaches to develop into the best versions of themselves.We have to ensure that there are clear and purposeful pathways in place so that everyone involved at Thirsk RUFC moves forwards in their rugby journey.I want to be in a position where we provide players that have come through our junior section with opportunities to play not only for our senior team, but regional and even international squads in the near future.Most importantly — I want everyone involved at the club to enjoy it.”

Adam will be leading on:

• Player progression — clear pathways for every age grade, ensuring all players can grow and move confidently to the next stage.
• Coach development — supporting coaches with mentoring, guidance, and opportunities to develop alongside their players.
• Parent engagement — helping parents understand the sport, feel part of the journey, and even explore coaching themselves.
• Club culture — creating an environment where enjoyment, belonging, and ambition sit at the heart of everything we do.

His experience in education means he knows how to build the best possible environment for people to thrive — something that will be key this season and beyond.

We’re proud to introduce Angus Ramsey as the new Chairman of Thirsk Rugby Club.

“My aim is to help build a club that people are genuinely proud to be part of, both on and off the pitch. I want us to focus on recruiting and retaining players and volunteers, making our junior section the foundation of our future, and creating more opportunities for everyone to come together socially. Above all, I want us to build a club based on the core values of rugby, where people feel valued, enjoy being part of the club, and want to bring others along with them.”

Angus brings huge experience from his playing career, having represented Malton & Norton, Ilkley, and other strong Yorkshire clubs. He’s played in great environments, learned from top coaches, and understands what a thriving rugby community looks and feels like. He’ll bring those standards, that passion, and that experience straight into Thirsk.

To build on his statement, Angus shared that he wants Thirsk to be a club where:
• Everyone feels welcome the moment they arrive
• Players of all ages can develop, enjoy their rugby, and feel part of something bigger
• Volunteers are supported, appreciated, and never taken for granted
• The club becomes a genuine hub for the community — a place people choose to spend their time
• We grow together, celebrate together, and move forward together

We have some changes to announce at Thirsk Rugby Club.

We want to thank those who have stepped away from roles in the club and welcome some new faces.

Geoff Iles steps away from chairman to focus more on sponsorship and income generation. Geoff has done great things for the club, connecting us with the community and showing Thirsk we are more than just a rugby club.

Max Green steps down as Junior Chairman and leaves the club due to life commitments. Max has been key in building up the junior section and has tirelessly volunteered around the club. You will be missed, and we hope to see you when we can.

Matt Brown steps back from co-captain to focus on his playing. Matt has been a great leader, and we cannot wait to see him play without distractions.

We want to thank the dinner ladies Diane Brown and Sarah Sargent for their tireless efforts making fantastic after-match meals and making everyone who visits Newsham Road feel welcome.

Now to welcome in some new faces!!

Taking over at the helm in the Club Chairman role is Angus Ramsay. Angus is no stranger to leadership and cares hugely about Thirsk Rugby and its development on and off the field.

Adam Richards takes over as Junior Chairman. Adam, who currently plays for the seniors, is also a teacher and leader in his role in education. Adam wants the junior section to not only grow but to develop how we coach rugby, providing a fantastic learning experience for all.

Finally, we welcome Dan Thompson into the role of Captain, working alongside Matt Mason, who returns from injury this year.

Dan is no stranger to high-pressure situations, being a team leader in the fire service. We hope to see his leadership qualities on the pitch.

We will look at each new person in more depth this week, but I'm sure you will thank those who have contributed so much and welcome those who now take on the roles.

Don’t forget tomorrow, 30th of August at 10am is our final free taster event for any junior aged 3-16 to come to meet us and give rugby a go!!

Our experienced coaches will be on hand to give your child the best experience possible in choosing to play rugby!!

We are on the back pitches at TAC, Newsham Road, where the entrance to the squash courts are.

Sports Therapist Required

Thirsk RUFC We’re looking for a qualified/trainee sports therapist to support our adult players pitch‑side on match days and run a weekly clinic at the club.
You’ll help with: • Player recovery • Prehab & rehab • Injury prevention • Match‑day treatment and support
And you’ll have access to our multi‑sport facilities to grow your own practice: 🏏 Cricket 🎾 Tennis 🏑 Hockey 🏓 Padel (TBC) 🎳 Bowls

What a transformation from an arid patch of grass to a pitch ready to go for the new season all with in 3 weeks, with a huge amount of TLC from
Jon Barr our dedicated and diligent grounds man, helped by irrigation from Thirsk Racecourse Ltd (Official) and a fresh trim from Stiga robotic mowers
