YOUNG HORSE RIDER / PRODUCER WANTED
We’re looking for an experienced, confident rider to join the team at Harling Wood Stud and take a lead role in the education of our young horses.
We have a growing number of highly bred young sport horses, predominantly warmbloods, being produced for showjumping and eventing, and we need someone who is genuinely experienced with youngsters from the very beginning.
The role will include taking horses from being essentially unhandled babies through to the point where they are safe, confident and ready to begin their competitive education.
You’ll be responsible for:
* Groundwork and general handling
* Teaching youngsters to stand for the farrier
* Loading and travelling preparation
* Lunging and long-reining
* Backing and starting under saddle
* Walking, trotting and cantering away
* Hacking them out in the forest
* Building confidence in different environments
* Producing them to the point where they are sensible, rideable and ready to move on with their education
This is not a role for someone who is nervous around young horses. Young horses can be sharp, unpredictable and occasionally ridiculous, so we need someone who is brave, calm, lightweight, balanced and experienced enough to deal with whatever they throw at you without losing their head.
The ideal person will be:
* A confident, gutsy rider
* Lightweight and effective
* Very experienced with young warmbloods/sport horses
* Calm, patient and consistent
* Happy to work hard
* Sensible rather than reckless
* Comfortable backing and riding away youngsters independently
* Used to dealing with fresh, sharp and highly bred horses
* Someone who genuinely enjoys producing young horses
The mornings will also involve helping the team get the yard finished - mucking out, general yard duties, feeding etc. Once the yard is sorted, the main focus of the day will be working with the youngsters.
This will be a really important role within the team. We already have a large number of young horses and that number is only increasing, so for the right person there is plenty of responsibility, variety and opportunity.
Would suit someone from a strong producing yard, racing/eventing/showjumping background and used to working hard and riding lots of young horses.
If you have balls of steel, soft hands and plenty of experience with babies, we’d love to hear from you.
