White Tiger “Tiger Cubs” Tewkesbury

White Tiger “Tiger Cubs” Tewkesbury A fun Martial Arts syllabus specifically designed for children between 4 - 9 yrs of age. Children learn through play, have fun, and gain life skills.

The Instructor, Mrs Jill Wanklyn is a 4th Degree Black Belt and has been training in Taekwon-Do for approximately 26 years. On the 28th September 2019, Mrs Wanklyn was presented with her 4th Degree Black Belt by one of the few remaining first generation pioneers of Tae Kwon-Do, Grandmaster Kong Young Il and Grandmaster Keith Finch for the promotion of and services to Tae Kwon-Do. The Tiger Cubs programme teaches children to be good citizens and prepares them for life, or at least school. This programme includes lessons in safety and life skills, as well as physical martial arts skills. These skills help the students become well rounded by promoting the child's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. We approach the physical portion of this class as a Martial Arts focused physical education class. The life skills portion of the class focuses on developing mental, social, and emotional skills. All skills and promotions are based on participation and programme completion. Our primary objective is to get the students involved, giving 100% effort, having fun and playing. The focus of the Tiger Cubs class is to develop fundamental basics. Therefore, we teach very few of the martial arts skills that you will see in older children's programmes. Instead, we focus on the skills they need BEFORE entering the older classes. Learn to share, Develop self-esteem, Develop a sense of independence, Take turns, Stimulate curiosity, Develop speech & language, Promote physical strength, Promote co-ordination and stamina, Develop a love of learning. Please find below the list of units covered in our Life Skills and Safety Skills syllabus. Build fundamental motor skills, Increases awareness of body and space, Follow directions, Encourage socialisation, Problem solve, Demonstrate responsibility, Show self-control, Act respectfully, Safety Skills, Fire safety, First aid, Health, Holiday safety, Home safety, Stranger awareness, Traffic safety, Bully buster, Life Skills, Balance, Co-operation, Co-ordination, Discipline, Exercise, Listening, Memory, Respect, Nutrition, Fire safety. 🐯 Play is serious business. And we treat it that way.

Tiger Cubs uses play deliberately. Not to make sessions frivolous, but because for children aged 4 to 9, play is how the brain learns. Movement games, imagination exercises and fun challenges are how we teach real martial arts concepts in a way that genuinely sticks.

Here's how it works in practice:

🎮 Movement games teach balance and coordination: Games where children must freeze in a pose, move only when called, or hold a stance are disguised balance drills. The child thinks they're playing. They're also training
🐅 The Tiger Cubs identity builds belonging: Every child in class is a Tiger Cub. The tiger theme runs through everything. Children engage more deeply when they're part of a story, not just attending a class
🎯 Imagination makes technique memorable: Describing a block as protecting yourself from something, or a kick as pushing away a force, gives young children a mental image that makes the physical movement easier to grasp and remember
🏆 Positive reinforcement anchors learning: Certificates, Star of the Lesson, cheering for each other. These aren't extras. They're how young children form the associations that make them want to come back

The best Tiger Cubs sessions are the ones where children arrive already asking what they're going to do today. 💛

That enthusiasm is the sign that learning is happening.

📅 Saturdays, 11:45am to 12:30pm. Ages 4+. Free first session.

👫 The friendships that form in Tiger Cubs. One of the things parents least expect to value.

Most parents bring their child to Tiger Cubs for the physical and discipline benefits. What they don't expect is how strong the social element becomes.

Children who train together share something different from school friends. They've faced challenges together. They've encouraged each other when something was hard. They've celebrated each other's gradings. That shared experience creates real bonds.

What the social environment in Tiger Cubs develops:

✅ Communication skills: Giving and receiving feedback during partner drills
✅ Empathy: Noticing when a partner is struggling and adjusting accordingly
✅ Conflict resolution: Training together means occasional frustration. Learning to manage it respectfully is built into every session
✅ Inclusion: Every child is a Tiger Cub. The group identity matters more than individual differences
✅ Collective pride: When one student achieves something, the group genuinely celebrates it

What parents tell us:

The friendships made in Tiger Cubs are often the most durable social connections their child forms outside school. Children ask to come to class on weeks they'd skip other activities. The relationships matter to them.

For children who struggle socially elsewhere, the structured, purposeful nature of Tiger Cubs is often exactly the environment where they thrive. Clear rules. Clear roles. Clear community. 🐯

🌟 How does grading work in Tiger Cubs? Here's exactly what happens.

One of the questions we hear most from parents is: how do gradings work for young children? The answer shows why Tiger Cubs is different from a standard children's activity.

Tiger Cubs gradings are designed to be encouraging milestones, not stressful tests.

What grading assesses in Tiger Cubs:

✅ Basic technique: Simple blocks, strikes and stances at the level appropriate for their T-shirt colour
✅ Focus and attention: Can the child follow instructions, maintain concentration and demonstrate what they've learned?
✅ Behaviour and respect: How do they carry themselves? Do they bow, listen, wait their turn?
✅ Progress from last time: The question isn't 'are they perfect?' It's 'have they improved?'

What grading is NOT in Tiger Cubs:

❌ A high-pressure formal examination
❌ Something that can be failed in a way that diminishes the child
❌ Based purely on physical technique without considering character

Grading intervals are gentle. Every three months for most Tiger Cubs, adjusted if the instructor feels the child isn't quite ready. There's no rush.

And when the new T-shirt colour is awarded? That moment of putting it on for the first time is one every parent wants to photograph. 📸

💪 How Tiger Cubs develops the physical skills children need for life.

Martial arts is one of the most comprehensive physical development activities available to young children. Not because of the kicks and blocks, but because of what those movements demand from a developing body.

What Tiger Cubs training builds physically:

🏃 Gross motor skills: Running, jumping, rolling, changing direction. The foundations of athletic movement
⚖️ Balance: Standing on one leg for a kick. Shifting weight between stances. Controlling the body precisely
🤝 Coordination: Making hands and feet work together in sequence. Timing a block with a step
💪 Core strength: Every kick, every punch, every stance activates the muscles that support everything else
🧘 Body awareness: Children who train learn how their body moves in space. That proprioception carries into every physical activity they'll ever do
⚡ Explosive power: Short, fast movements train fast-twitch muscle fibres. This transfers to running speed, jumping and athletic performance generally

What parents often notice:

✅ Better posture within weeks
✅ Improved balance in everyday activities
✅ Faster development in other sports
✅ Children who were uncoordinated becoming genuinely capable

The physical benefits of Tiger Cubs aren't a side effect of the training. They're a core goal. We're developing whole children, not just martial artists. 🐯

🙏 Respect. The first word every Tiger Cub learns. The most important one they carry home.

In the Dojang, respect is practical. You bow when you enter. You bow to your partner before drilling. You say 'Yes Instructor' when given a direction. You wait your turn quietly while someone else is being coached.

For young children, this is genuinely new. And they take to it.

Here's why respect lands so well in Tiger Cubs:

✅ It's immediate and observable: Bowing, standing still, listening. Children see exactly what respectful behaviour looks like and can copy it from day one
✅ It's applied in both directions: Instructors model respect constantly. Children don't just receive it. They give it and see it given back to them
✅ It has clear expectations: There's no ambiguity. You bow here. You listen now. Clear rules are genuinely comfortable for young children
✅ It becomes habitual: After enough repetitions, respectful behaviour becomes the default. It stops being a rule and becomes character

What parents tell us is that the respectful habits they see in the Dojang carry home within weeks. Children start saying please and thank you without being prompted. They wait their turn in conversations. They listen when others are speaking.

These aren't small things. They're the foundations of character. And they start with a bow. 🐯

🏆 The board break. One of the most powerful moments in a Tiger Cubs journey.

Imagine being five years old and smashing through a board with your bare hand for the first time. The look of disbelief. Then pride. Then the immediate demand to do it again.

Board breaking isn't just a flashy technique. It's a carefully designed exercise in belief. Here's what it actually teaches:

✅ Commitment: You can't half-break a board. You either commit fully or it doesn't break. Children learn what wholehearted effort actually feels like
✅ Overcoming fear: The board looks solid. Breaking it requires pushing past that perception. That's a mental skill with lifelong value
✅ Cause and effect: The technique works when executed correctly. This teaches children that precision matters and the right approach delivers the right result
✅ Self-belief: After the first break, the child knows something they didn't before. They're capable of something that looked impossible. That knowledge stays.

In Tiger Cubs, board breaking is introduced at the right moment for each individual child. Not rushed. Not forced. The instructor ensures the technique is solid, the child is ready, and the moment is right.

When it happens? The whole room knows. 🐯

🧡 The Tiger Cubs uniform. Colourful by design. Significant by purpose.

You've probably noticed that our Tiger Cubs students wear coloured T-shirts rather than a traditional white dobok. There's a very deliberate reason for that.

Tiger Cubs is our specialist programme for children aged 4 and up. It's built differently from the main Taekwon-Do class, and the uniform reflects that. Here's how it works:

⚪️ White T-shirt: The starting uniform. Every new Tiger Cub begins here
🔴 Red T-shirt: First belt progression. Showing early development and commitment
🟢 Green T-shirt: Building skills and confidence with growing technique
🔵 Blue T-shirt: More advanced Tiger Cubs, approaching readiness for the main class

With other colours in-between, each T-shirt colour corresponds to their belt level and progress through the Tiger Cubs syllabus. When children graduate to the main Taekwon-Do class, they move into the traditional white dobok and begin the full belt system.

The coloured T-shirts serve a practical purpose too. Children identify with their colour immediately. They can see who's at a similar level. Visual progress motivates them, and it's child-friendly, bright and welcoming. 🐯

Every uniform is purchased from the academy and becomes part of how the child identifies as a Tiger Cub. That sense of belonging matters enormously to young learners. 💛

🤝 Training together. One of the most powerful things Tiger Cubs teaches.

Partner work is woven into every Tiger Cubs session. From the earliest classes, children learn to pair up, take turns, and train safely alongside someone else. That's a bigger life skill than most people realise.

Here's what partner work teaches:

✅ Respect: You're responsible for your partner's safety. You control your technique and your power
✅ Communication: Learning to give and receive instructions clearly, even at age four
✅ Trust: Working with someone who holds the pad, takes the turn, supports the drill
✅ Patience: Waiting your turn without complaint. Letting someone else go first
✅ Empathy: Understanding that your partner might find something difficult that you find easy

What parents notice is that children who learn to train with partners develop better social skills generally. They become more aware of others in group situations. They handle classroom group work more confidently.

None of this is accidental. The structure of partner drilling is designed to develop social awareness alongside physical skill. 🐯

And the best part? Children learn better when they're engaged with someone else. The energy of partner work keeps sessions lively, motivating and genuinely fun. 💛

⭐ TIGER CUBS STAR OF THE LESSON ⭐🐯🥋

A huge congratulations to Quinn, who was chosen as our Tiger Cubs Star of the Lesson yesterday! 🌟👏

Quinn really impressed us with his great technique throughout the lesson, showing good focus and a fantastic attitude towards his training. 🥋💪

But what really stood out was his partner work with Frank. 🤝🐯

Frank is much smaller than Quinn, and Quinn showed great awareness and consideration when working with him. He adapted his partner work appropriately while still helping Frank get the most out of the drills. 👊😊

Being a good martial artist isn't just about how well you perform the techniques yourself. It's also about how you work with the people around you, showing patience, control, teamwork and respect. ⭐

Quinn demonstrated all of those qualities yesterday, while also maintaining some fantastic technique of his own. 🥋🔥

🌟 Well done, Quinn! 🌟

Keep up the great work, keep helping your training partners and keep developing those fantastic martial arts skills! 🐯💪🥋
