I coach and train other people age 35+ who are driven to make a difference to their lives who may also have their own physical or mental issues to overcome, to improve on their current fitness and meet their own personal goals whether it is to lose weight, tone up, train for a gruelling event or like me back in 2008 recover after a traumatic event. 18 BUSINESSES. 5 FINALISTS. 1 WINNER.

I'm incredibly pleased to announce that **Ideal Fitness has been named Health & Fitness Service of the Year – Central England

Prestige Awards 2026/27.**

And this one means a lot.

Not because there's another logo I can put on the website.

But because of what happens behind the doors at Ideal Fitness every week.

People in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond walking through the door wanting to change something.

Lose body fat.
Become stronger.
Move without discomfort.
Recover from injury or illness.
Feel confident exercising again.

Or simply make sure the body they have today is capable of supporting the life they want tomorrow.

That's what Ideal Fitness has always been about.

Not intimidating gyms.
Not judgement.
Not punishing people because they've let their fitness slip.
Meeting someone where they are — and helping them move forward.

To have that work recognised by being named Health & Fitness Service of the Year is something I'm extremely proud of.

But the biggest thank you has to go to my clients.

You're the reason Ideal Fitness exists, and you're the reason I still love doing this after all these years.

Health & Fitness Service of the Year.

That's going to take a little while to sink in.

HOW EXPENSIVE IS YOUR COMFORT ZONE?

You've worked hard to make life easier.

You have a comfortable car.
A comfortable office chair.
Food delivered.
Shopping delivered.
Meetings on Teams.
Escalators.
Lifts.
Central heating.
A cleaner.
Maybe someone looks after the garden.
Technology means you can run a business without leaving your desk.

That's success, isn't it?

Perhaps, but there's a strange consequence nobody talks about.

The more successful we become, the more we can afford to remove physical effort from our lives - think about it.

We used to carry things.
Now they're delivered.

We used to walk somewhere.
Now we drive.

We used to get up to speak to somebody.
Now we message them.

We used to take the stairs.
Now there's a lift.

And if we're fortunate enough, we can pay other people to do almost everything physically demanding for us.
That's brilliant for convenience.

But your body doesn't understand convenience.

It understands demand.

Your muscles need a reason to remain strong.
Your heart needs a reason to work.
Your joints need movement.
Your balance needs challenging.
Your body needs to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, bend and climb.

And there's the irony.

We spend the first half of our lives working hard enough to make life easier...
Then we may need to deliberately make parts of it harder again to stay healthy.

I'm certainly not suggesting you cancel the cleaner and start carrying your weekly shopping home five miles.

I'm suggesting you notice how much physical effort has quietly disappeared from your life.

Take the stairs sometimes.
Carry your own bags.
Walk while you're taking a call.
Get down on the floor.
Lift something.
Use your body.

Because perhaps one of the biggest threats to our physical capability after 40 isn't that life becomes too hard.

It's that we've become very good at making life physically easy.

Something to think about this weekend.

YOUR BODY NEEDS A REASON TO STAY STRONG.

We often talk about losing strength as though it's something that
suddenly happens when we get older.

But think about how many opportunities to use our strength
gradually disappear.

We sit more.

Drive more.

Lift less.

Take the easier option.

And without really noticing it, we stop asking our bodies to do the things they once did regularly.

Then one day...

The shopping feels heavier.

Getting off the floor takes more effort.

The stairs feel steeper.

You don't feel quite as physically capable as you used to.

And we say:

“Well, I'm getting older.”

Age certainly plays a part.

But that doesn't mean we should simply accept becoming weaker.

Your body responds to what you ask of it, "use it or lose it"

That's one of the reasons strength training becomes so important as we get older.

Not because you need huge muscles.

Not because you need to lift enormous weights.

Because you need strength for LIFE.

Carrying.

Walking.

Lifting.

Getting up.

Staying independent.

Doing the things you enjoy without wondering whether your body can cope and do simple things without injury

So don't wait until everyday life starts testing your strength.
Keep testing it yourself.

Give your body a reason to stay capable because if you don't...

30 SECONDS → 60 SECONDS.

Doesn't sound life-changing, does it?

For Brad, it matters.

Brad is recovering from a stroke and usually manages around 30 seconds on the SkiErg.

In his latest session, he completed a full minute.

We also added more resistance to his band work and replaced the normal cable-machine handle with a towel to give his grip an additional challenge.

These aren't dramatic transformations.

They're small, carefully progressed challenges.

But that's what progress often looks like.

A little stronger.

A little longer.

A little more control.

A little more confidence.

Then you build on it.

One of the problems with social media is that we're constantly shown extraordinary results.

And that can make our own progress feel insignificant.

It isn't.

Your progress should be measured against where YOU started—not where somebody else is today.

For one person, progress might be losing a stone.

For another, lifting 50kg.

For someone else, getting out of a chair more easily.

And for Brad this week...

30 seconds became 60.

That's progress worth celebrating.

Never let somebody else's starting point diminish how far you've come.

Over 40, keeping your core strong becomes increasingly important because your core is involved in almost everything you do — not just exercise.

A strong core helps you:

* Protect your lower back by supporting and stabilising your spine.
* Maintain better posture, particularly if you spend hours sitting at a desk.
* Move with more control when bending, twisting, lifting and reaching.
* Stay stronger in everyday life, getting out of a chair, carrying shopping, gardening or playing sport.
* Improve balance and stability, which becomes increasingly valuable as you age.
* Train more effectively because your core provides the stable base from which your arms and legs produce force.
* Stay independent later in life. You're not simply training your abs, you're building a body that's better equipped for your 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond.

And importantly, core strength isn't about having a six-pack. Your core includes muscles around your abdomen, lower back, pelvis and hips that work together to stabilise your body.

A simple way to think about it:

Over 40, you don't train your core to look younger.
You train it so your body keeps working younger.

YOUR NECK ISN’T THE PROBLEM - Your working day might be.

You have a stiff neck.
Your shoulders feeling like they're creeping towards your ears.
That familiar ache across your upper back by the end of the day.

It's easy to think:
"I just need a good stretch."

But think about what you've asked your body to do all day.

Sit.

Look at a screen.

Concentrate.

Deal with pressure.

Stay in virtually the same position for hours.

Then perhaps spend the evening looking at your phone or another screen.

Your body is simply responding to what you're repeatedly asking it to do.

Sports massage and mobilisation can release those tight muscles and restore movement.

But that's only part of the answer.

I also want to know why they became tight.

Sometimes the answer isn't another stretch.

It's getting away from the desk.

Changing position.

Moving your shoulders.

Walking for a couple of minutes.

Taking some slower breaths.

Giving your body regular opportunities to come out of the position it's been stuck in.

Putting my "health appointments" into your day will make this happen - ask me what they are

Treat the tightness and build strength with simple exercises
But don't ignore what keeps creating it.

Your body usually gives you plenty of warnings.

The question is whether you're listening.
