A competitive afternoon for the Green Army Ladies as we came away with a hard-fought 0-0 draw away at Rugby Town.

The hosts started with a few early attacks, but Coton Green responded with chances of our own. Rugby were caught offside on a couple of occasions, while Heather Clayton impressed defensively with some excellent work in the air.

Our best chance of the first half came from Emma Benton, who unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the box which rattled the crossbar.

Both sides continued to battle and create opportunities, but neither could find the breakthrough before half time.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with chances for both sides. Lois Brindley came close from a corner, and following the counter attack Jess Jenkinson did well to keep her clean sheet by punching out a dangerous free kick.

The Green Army continued to work hard and move the ball well, with Sophie Noakes doing brilliantly to beat her player before squaring the ball to Lexi Gunn, whose effort went narrowly wide.

A fairly quiet second half in terms of clear-cut chances saw both sides settle for a point.

A solid defensive display and another clean sheet to take forward as we turn our attention back to the FA Cup.

A stellar performance from the Green Army Ladies this afternoon secures progression to the First Qualifying Round, with a 2-0 victory over a strong Telford Town side.

Coton started brightly, however Telford created a couple of early chances with the defence standing strong to keep them at bay. Mia Brown came close from the wing with an effort just wide of the post after a great run down the left. The opening goal was in sight though for Coton when brilliant forward work by Lexi Gunn won a free kick in a dangerous position just outside of the box.

Up stepped Captain Jade Lapthorne, who opened the scoring for the Green Army with a venomous strike which ricocheted off the crossbar before hitting the keeper and finding its way over the line. This settled the game and allowed Coton to find their rhythm, but the visitors continued to probe themselves looking for the equaliser.

One of their attacks produced a great save from a long-range effort to preserve Coton’s lead, with the Green Army remaining defensively solid and Lapthorne continuing to threaten with more efforts before the break.

The second half saw more chances created, with a brilliant Stacie Doyle corner finding Clayton’s head, only for the effort to narrowly miss before the keeper claimed it.

The second finally came from Doyle’s free kick, which was whipped into the box and initially cleared by the defender. Lapthorne was quickest to react, picking up the scraps before unleashing a thunderous strike from outside the box into the top-left corner

Telford pushed late on, but Jenkinson produced a fantastic save in the 86th minute to preserve her clean sheet and ensure the Green Army saw the game out.

A brilliant defensive display, two quality goals and a place in the next round of the FA Cup for Coton.
