BEFORE YOU CHOOSE A MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL… DO YOUR RESEARCH AND THINK IT THROUGH UNLIKE THIS GUY
Whether you’re choosing a martial arts school for yourself or, more importantly, for your child, don’t choose purely on price, location or how good the advertising looks.
Ask a much more important question:
WHO IS ACTUALLY TEACHING THE CLASS?
How long have they trained?
How long have they been teaching?
What qualifications do they have?
Are they properly insured, DBS checked and trained in safeguarding and first aid?
And most importantly — do they genuinely have the experience and knowledge to teach martial arts safely and correctly?
We’ve seen people described as “advanced instructors” who have been training for less than two years.
For us, that simply isn’t enough experience.
Martial arts involves kicking, punching, stretching, pad work, fitness training and, eventually for some students, contact and sparring. Your instructor needs to understand technique, control, progression and how to teach different ages and abilities safely.
A uniform and an instructor title don’t automatically equal experience.
At SMAF, we believe you should look for instructors who have spent years developing their craft. Ask about their background. Ask who taught them. Ask how long they’ve trained. A reputable martial arts school should be happy to answer those questions.
And don’t automatically assume the most expensive club is the best — or that the cheapest club is giving you the best deal.
We consider ourselves a mid-range priced martial arts school. We’re not trying to be the cheapest.
We’re trying to provide quality coaching from experienced people in a safe, professional environment.
You only get one body.
And as a parent, you only get one child.
Make sure you put them in the hands of people you trust.
Do your research. Ask questions. Choose wisely
