'Spotting Potentially Challenging Client Presentations' (Specialist Training for all Therapists, Coaches and Counselors)
Not every client is going to be the perfect therapeutic fit — and recognising that early can save both the practitioner and the client a great deal of difficulty.
I've put together a new supervision resource for BLAST Technique® Practitioners looking at some of the behaviours and situations that can create challenges within therapeutic work.
We'll look at:
🔹 Recognising potential boundary issues
🔹 Repeated cancellations and communication difficulties
🔹 Unrealistic expectations of therapy
🔹 Over-familiarity and maintaining professional boundaries
🔹 Difficult therapeutic relationship patterns
🔹 Secondary gain and recurring behavioural patterns
🔹 Managing conflict and criticism professionally
🔹 Recognising when a therapeutic relationship may no longer be productive
🔹 When supervision or referral may be appropriate
🔹 And, importantly, avoiding the mistake of labelling or diagnosing someone simply because of their behaviour
This isn't about creating a list of "bad clients".
It's about developing the professional awareness to observe what's actually happening, remain curious rather than judgemental, maintain appropriate boundaries and recognise when a particular client/practitioner relationship may not be the right fit.
As therapists and practitioners, we're there to help our clients — but we're also responsible for maintaining our own professional boundaries.
Observe behaviour. Stay curious. Avoid assumptions. Maintain boundaries. Seek supervision.
A practical resource for therapists, coaches and counselors who want to continually develop their therapeutic skills and professional awareness.
