The eagerly awaited Frylite Senior Scratch Cup at Strabane Golf Club took place on Sunday 2nd August. A date in the calendar circled by all as soon as announced, it didn’t fail to deliver another superb day of golf. Mother Nature must also have saved the date, so with perfect playing conditions, supplemented by the greenkeepers’ tireless efforts to have the course in immaculate condition, the stage was well and truly set.

Players travelled from across the island, and even as far afield as Scotland and the northwest of England, a testament to the ever-growing reputation of the event.

The honours on the day went to none other than local man Enda Kennedy. On form in the build-up, Enda was always going to be hard to beat. A typically classy -2 first round set the foundation, and despite an early wobble at the 3rd in Rd2, Enda kept it between the ditches to post a level par total across the two rounds, a score good enough to win his twelfth (!!!) Strabane Scratch Cup.

There were also notable performances from several leading players:
• Aidan Boyle, Wils Patterson, Adam Cromwell, Joe Rooney and Thomas Campbell all featured in the overall gross honours to keep the contest tight to the wire.
• Nicky Patton strolled to a convincing overall nett victory after a couple of great rounds — but was again kept honest by impressive performances from Paddy Shields, Kevin Gallagher, Rory Gallagher and Mickey Forbes Jr all amongst the nett prizes.

As always, Strabane GC would like to express our deepest thanks to Eamon McCay of Frylite. This event has continued to go from strength to strength, and without the support of Frylite over the last 18 years, this wouldn’t have been possible. Their loyalty and generosity are always much appreciated by everyone at Strabane Golf Club.

On the topic of thanks, acknowledgment must go to the greenkeeping staff, with even the most difficult to please seriously impressed by the state the course and greens were presented in.

Hospitality was also roundly approved of, with the delicious spread put on by Parkland 33 alongside the beverages provided by the superb bar staff all greatly appreciated.

Behind the scenes, the competition ran seamlessly, as always, thanks to the dedication and commitment of Damian McGranaghan, Patrick McCrossan, and Gerard Walsh - your efforts do not go unnoticed, especially in challenging circumstances.

Finally, many thanks to Club Vice-Captain Gerard Walsh, who deputised for Captain James Patton to oversee presentation proceedings. Gerard’s annual efforts as starter ensure that the day gets off on the right foot, no mean feat keeping 60+ players on the right track. So to close out proceedings 12+ hours later…fair play Gerard.
