đŸ’„ PHYSICAL DOMINANCE ≠ RUGBY ABILITY

The biggest, strongest or fastest player at U12–U15 can often dominate games.

But what happens when everyone else catches up? 👀

Junior rugby shouldn’t just be about who can have the biggest impact right now.

It should be about developing the skills, decision-making and understanding that players will need when the physical differences start to disappear.

And on the other side

How many smaller or later-developing players are overlooked because they can’t physically dominate yet?

🏉 Develop the player, not just the performance.

👇 Do we overvalue size and physicality in junior rugby?

Coaches & parents — interested to hear your thoughts.

đŸ”„ WINNING DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN GOOD COACHING.

Winning matters. Competition matters. Players should want to win.

But in youth rugby, the scoreboard doesn’t always tell you whether development is actually happening.

A team can win every week because they’re bigger, faster or simply have better players.

The bigger questions are:

🏉 Are the players improving?
🧠 Are they learning to make decisions?
🙌 Are they enjoying their rugby?
đŸ”„ Are they being challenged?
📈 Are we developing players for the future?

Sometimes great coaching might actually cost you a result today — because you’re giving players opportunities, allowing mistakes and putting long-term development ahead of short-term success.

Winning is part of development. It shouldn’t be the definition of it.

So coaches and parents

👇 Would you rather have the best U13 team today or develop the best players for U18?

đŸ”„ CONTROVERSIAL: Youth rugby is over coached

Walk around some junior rugby sessions and you’ll hear coaches constantly giving players instructions.

Where to stand.
When to pass.
Where to run.
What decision to make.

Then we wonder why players struggle to make decisions themselves on match day.

Good coaching isn’t necessarily about saying more.

Sometimes it’s about designing the right environment and getting out of the way.

Give players problems to solve.
Let them make mistakes.
Ask questions.
Let the game teach.

And intervene when your coaching can genuinely make a difference.

We’re not suggesting coaches aren’t important — quite the opposite.

We’re suggesting that great coaching doesn’t always look like coaching.

đŸ”„ What do you think?

Is youth rugby over-coached?
