WANT BETTER BALANCE? STOP JUST PRACTISING STANDING ON ONE LEG. 👀
Balance is a whole-body skill.
Your brain constantly combines information from your eyes, inner ear, feet, joints and muscles to work out where your body is in space — then makes tiny adjustments to keep you upright.
So if you want to improve your balance, it makes sense to train the different systems involved.
So here are 3 simple ways to train them:
1️⃣ STRENGTHEN YOUR HIP STABILISERS 🍑
When you’re standing on one leg, your pelvis needs to stay relatively level.
Your gluteus medius and other lateral hip muscles help control the position of your pelvis and thigh bone.
That’s why controlled leg lifts and single-leg knee bends are useful.
Strength + control = better support.
2️⃣ MOVE — DON’T JUST HOLD 🦶
Real-life balance isn’t static. Walking, stepping, changing direction and reaching all require your body to continually adjust.
Your feet, ankles, knees and hips work together to keep your centre of mass controlled.
So practise balance while moving slowly and deliberately — and pay attention to your feet. They’re an important source of sensory information about the ground beneath you.
3️⃣ TAKE AWAY YOUR EYES 👀
Your vision gives your brain information about where you are in your surroundings.
Close your eyes and you remove some of that information, asking your proprioceptive and vestibular systems to contribute more.
Proprioception is your body’s sense of where your limbs and joints are in space, using information from receptors in your muscles, tendons and joints.
Just a few seconds can be enough to create a different challenge.
Always do this beside something sturdy and only if it feels safe for you.
And remember:
THE WOBBLE IS NOT FAILURE.
Your body is constantly receiving information → making an adjustment → receiving more information → adjusting again.
The wobble is part of the learning.
Don’t aim for perfectly still.
Aim to become better at responding.
