This☝️

🌧️☔ Ahhh… a British Bank Holiday! ☔🌧️

Of course it’s raining. 😂

If your plans today have gone from “Let’s get out and make the most of the day!” to “Right… what on earth are we going to do with the kids ALL DAY?” …we see you! 👀😂

But rainy days can make some of the best memories. 💚

🏠 Dens in the living room
🎬 Films under blankets
🍿 Far too many snacks
🎨 Crafts and colouring
🥾 Wellies on and puddle jumping
☕ Hot chocolates afterwards
🎲 Board games (until somebody gets far too competitive 😆)
💃 Kitchen discos
😴 And absolutely no pressure to make the day “productive”

Sometimes children don’t need a perfectly planned Bank Holiday.

They just need time, connection, silliness and you. 💚

And if everyone is still in their pyjamas at lunchtime?

We’re calling that a successful Bank Holiday. 😂🙌

🎒 Back to school isn’t always as simple as putting on the uniform and walking through the gates.

For some children, particularly those who have experienced trauma, change or uncertainty, returning to school can bring some really big feelings.

And they might not tell us:

💭 “I’m worried.”
💭 “What if things are different?”
💭 “What if I can’t manage?”
💭 “What if you don’t come back?”
💭 “I don’t feel safe yet.”

Instead, they might show us through their behaviour.

You might notice more arguments, tears, anger, withdrawal, clinginess, difficulty sleeping, refusing to get ready or behaviour that seems to come completely out of nowhere.

Sometimes we need to look beyond “What is this behaviour?” and wonder “What might this behaviour be trying to tell me?” 💚

This is where PACE can be such a helpful approach:

💚 Playfulness – bringing warmth and lightness where appropriate
💚 Acceptance – accepting the feeling, even when we need to hold a boundary around the behaviour
💚 Curiosity – gently wondering what might be happening underneath
💚 Empathy – letting them know we understand that this feels hard

We don’t always need to fix the feeling.

Sometimes our children simply need an adult who can stay alongside them while they experience it.

So as we head back to school, remember…

Behaviour is communication.

Look underneath it. Stay curious. Keep connecting. 💚
