Thornton Cup Handicap 2026 🏆🏆

What a night. 23 runners out battling for the prestigious Thornton Cup.

What is the handicap though? Well, our runners work hard all year trying to beat their PBs in a 5k, then it's used against them in the handicap. The better your 5k the longer you have to wait to run after out 1st runner (scratch) has started. The aim being, everyone should cross the finish line at the same time (give or take)

Monday Social Run: Back at the Barrage! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Back, back, back again at Tees Barrage—one of our homes for the darker nights!

We set out for a gorgeous route running alongside the river, heading up and over Newport Bridge, and looping back along the other side.

In true Monday night style, absolutely no one was left behind... although we did have a *little* bit of group separation this time around! 😂

Group One: Discovered that one of our members isn't a fan of running over bridges, so a quick executive decision and a turnaround was had! (Adapt and overcome!) 🌉🚫

Group Two: Took a "slight detour" along the way (we won't ask too many questions!) 👀

Group Three: Actually managed to stick to the planned route! 👏

You know what, though? Every single person got out there, got the miles in, stayed safe and we all joined back together at the end. That is exactly what these runs are all about!

Weekend Roundup! 🏃‍♂️🏟️

📍NECAA 10k (10000m) Track Championships (Saturday 19th)

Huge congratulations to Greg, who took home the NECAA track title with a superb time of 32:46.3! 🥇

It was an absolute thriller of a race, featuring a fantastic battle with Jordan Bell (Blackhill Boulders), where the lead swapped multiple times. A massive well done to Jordan as well, who secured a brilliant PB of 33:06.7!

Our own Paul Young was up competing in the Throws Pentathlon and has this to say "It really was a great battle between Greg and Jordan Bell with the lead swapping multiple times. You know it’s a good race when all the throwers doing the shot put stop to cheer the guys on!"

📍North East Masters Throws Pentathlon (Saturday 19th)

A massive well done to Paul Young taking a fantastic 2nd place in his age group to cap off the year. A very solid performance all around. Enjoy that well-deserved end-of-season rest, it is definitely earned!

📍 Hardmoors 60 (Saturday 19th)

Paul Wilkin completed the last event in his Super Slam at the Hardmoors 60 yesterday. So thats the 30,40,55,60 and 110 completed.

And he's only gone and WON the Super Slam!!! Incredible Paul.

Monday Social Run 🌅🌊

Oh summer, we'll miss you (when you decide to actually end, that is)!

It was another warm one tonight for our final summer outing, and it was only fitting that we spent it by the sea. Why didn't we go for ice cream instead? Next year! 🍦

Thank you to everyone who came down, it was another great turnout to see the start of the week in.

Our club members get to go back to serious run mode tomorrow with training.

Now we have hit September there is no better time to come and join the mighty M&C. Membership for the rest of the year will only cost £25. This covers all your affiliation fees, all training sessions and you get to be part of an amazing club!
This covers your membership until the end of the year. (Annual fees due in Jan) So if you have been thinking about joining a club then theres no better incentive!

We also accept junior members age 12+ at £25 too!

We are happy for you to come give us a try first before signing up and of course our Monday Social Runners is completely free!

Weekend Roundup! 🏃‍♂️🏅🏃‍♀️

What an absolutely jam-packed weekend for the club! From throwing discus on the national stage to battling windy fell races, tackling the iconic Great North Run, and getting muddy in XC training, we have been everywhere.

📍British National Masters Athletics Championships (Saturday 12th)

Huge congratulations to Paul Young, who pulled on the M&C vest for his 13th British National Masters in the discus!

Paul finished a brilliant 4th in his age group, smashing his goal of a top-8 finish and recording his best placement since 2009! Despite narrowly missing out on the bronze medal on literally the final throw of the competition, it was a fantastic battle and an incredible achievement. He has one more competition next weekend before a well-earned rest. Great work, Paul! 💪

📍Castleton Show Race (Saturday 12th)

Over in the hills, Mark Jackson took on the 10k Castleton Show race. Mark battled through a very hilly, undulating course made even tougher by strong winds, finishing 25th overall and 7th in the highly competitive V45 category.

This race is described as "the fell race for road runners and road race for fell runners"

Special Shout out: Isaiah stole the show, taking 2nd in the egg and spoon race and 3rd in the kids' sprint! 🥚🥄 Meanwhile, Mark wisely resisted the urge to enter the adult wheelbarrow race and tug of war to save himself from further injury! 😂

A massive well done to our Harriers (And Monday Runners) who took on the 13.1 miles from Newcastle to South Shields today! You all smashed it out there on an incredible day for North East running (and what a hot one it was)

And finally, for those who weren't racing at the GNR or recovering from Saturday's events, the winter grind officially kicked off with a great Cross Country training session down at Foxes Wood. Cross country season is calling! 🌲👟

And what do you need after a heavy weekend of running? A cheeky trip to the beach. We'll be back with our Monday Social tomorrow meeting at The Stray Cafe, Redcar (18:30) if anyone needs a cool down easy run
