Shadow of Madness - in conversation with D.V. Bishop

📍 Serenity Booksellers (Romiley), Stockport, SK6 4EA
🗓️ Tuesday 21st July 2026

✨ Come along and have the chance of winning a double pass to Stockport Noir 2027! ✨

Shop favourite D.V. Bishop returns to Romiley on Tuesday 21st July for the release of the sixth book in his bestselling Cesare Aldo series Shadow of Madness.

Set in 16th Century Tuscany, Shadow of Madness is a gripping and suspenseful thriller where murder and madness blur as inspector Cesare Also is trapped by a snowstorm in a secure institution for the criminally insane!

David will be in conversation with bookshop owner Kelly and the talk will be followed by an audience Q&A and booksigning.

Tickets are just £5 or £20 including a copy of Shadow of Madness.

Event starts at 6:30pm (doors at 6pm)

About the book:

Tuscany. Winter, 1540.

Travelling north into the hills above Florence, investigator Cesare Aldo seeks answers about his past. The trail leads him to Ospedale de’ Pazzi, a secure institution for the criminally insane.

Soon after arriving a blizzard engulfs the area, trapping Aldo and his companion, Doctor Saul Orvieto. Even more alarming, their cart driver is found dead. It looks like he fell over a nearby cliff in the whiteout – but Aldo suspects foul play. When a brutal slaying occurs in the central courtyard, it becomes clear a killer lurks among them.

With the snowstorm sealing everyone in and a murderer hunting fresh victims, Aldo’s search for the truth proves deadlier than he could ever have imagined . . .

About the author:

D. V. Bishop is the pseudonym of writer David Bishop. His love for Italy and the Renaissance period meant there could be only one setting for his historical thrillers. His novels have won the CWA Historical Dagger, the NZ Booklovers Award, and the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Novel. He has also been shortlisted for Scotland’s McIlvanney Prize, the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize, and for the CWA Gold Dagger. David teaches creative writing at Edinburgh Napier University.

Shadow of Madness is the sixth Cesare Aldo mystery.

Finally watched the Project Hail Mary film, which I’ve been putting off as it was our very first Book Club book back in July 2023 and I loved it. So glad it was faithful to the book and a great example of how to make an alien film (I’m looking at you, Mr Spielberg…Disclosure Day??).

Andy Weir’s big blockbuster novel was a delight to the twelve that met to discuss what they’ve read and it was one of the highest rated books in the time we’ve been getting together. My gosh, I’ve enjoyed every session - but this one will always hold a special place in my heart and made even more special now by the fantastic film.

Were you at that first bookclub? What did you think of the film? Are there books you’ve read that you loved that just didn’t translate to the big screen?

Book club is one of the great joys of running an indie bookshop! 💜
