“I know I can run faster.

I just don’t know how.”

That was Helen.

Single mum. Two boys, 8 and 11. Busy job. Gym classes. Running.

And every Saturday, parkrun with her boys — something they genuinely loved doing together.

She wasn’t lazy.

She wasn’t lacking motivation.

She was already doing plenty.

But she felt like she was getting slower.

The training that had always worked wasn’t working anymore.

And she couldn’t understand why.

So when Helen came to me, she thought getting faster might mean finding more time to train.

We looked at her week.

There wasn’t any.

And I wasn’t about to tell a busy single mum to somehow magic another five hours out of nowhere.

So we asked a different question.

Not…

“How can we do more?”

But…

“How can we get more from what you’re already doing?”

That was the turning point.

We made some simple changes to her existing training and gave each session more purpose.

Then we set some targets.

10K in three months.

Half marathon in six.

Three months later, Helen ran her first sub-60 10K.

Her parkrun dropped by around 2 minutes 30 seconds.

And Saturday mornings with her boys became even more enjoyable.

Then six months in…

She broke two hours for the half marathon — going through the first 10K in under 55 minutes.

Six months earlier, she thought she was getting slower.

She didn’t need more time.

She didn’t need to train harder.

She needed to make better use of the time she already had.

And maybe you do too.

Because when runners stop improving, the temptation is always to add MORE.

More miles.

More sessions.

More effort.

Sometimes the answer isn’t more.

Sometimes it’s understanding what needs to change.

If you’re thinking…

“I know I can improve. I just don’t know how.”

Massive shout out to Chris Watling who took on the Great Run this morning.

Toe issues at miles 8 and 10 didn’t allow Chris to fully hit training paces, but he still managed to get the job done in 1.59 - just behind Andy Burnham

Breaking the two hour barrier is always a great result, especially in a course as busy as the Great North Run 👍

Myself and Kerstin Prior made the trip to Battersea Park today to take on the RunThrough | Running Events & Community 10km.

Both of us tired after racing a midweek 5km on Wednesday we decided to start with different pacers and see what would happen.

I managed to break my PB from 2014 on very tired legs with a time of 46.53 knowing on fresh legs there is more in the tank.

Kerstin finished in 49.36 another PB - TWO in a week - which shows the return to racing is agreeing with her.

Both in our late 50’s
Both still achieving PB’s
Both showing if you train properly age is just a number.

Those free 30 calls are still available 😊

So what is your favourite race?

Apart from which is my local favourite - I am totally biased though - and entries are still open for October.

I would have to say for a destination you can’t go far wrong with for a brilliant destination running festival.

But I really want to hear what you would recommend for 2027 😊

**That time I went past Mo Farah at 1km…**

And yes, it’s a true story. 😁

It was around 16/17 years ago at the London 10K.

Back when I was in my prime.

Well…younger than I am now, anyway.

I’d been training hard. Speedwork, lifting weights and trying to get myself
into decent shape.

It was my first really big race and there were thousands of runners warming up, doing drills and strides and generally making me wonder whether I should be doing something I wasn’t.

Then came the pre-race nerves.

Are my laces tight enough?

Will these safety pins rub?

Do I need another wee?

Can I make it 10K without another wee?

You know…the important performance questions.

Then we were off.

The first kilometre was the usual bun fight. People going off too quickly, jostling for position and probably discovering they DID need that extra wee.

But I settled into a nice rhythm.

Pace felt good. Breathing felt good.

Then I reached the 1km marker.

And there he was.

**Mo Farah.**

I went straight past him.

Admittedly, he was on the **other side of the road**, passing the **9km marker** and heading for the finish while I still had 9km to run.

But these are minor details.

Technically, I went past Mo Farah at 1km and nobody can take that away from me. 😂

That race taught me something I’ve learned many times since:

**Getting fitter is only part of becoming a better racer. You also have to learn how to race.**

Pacing. Warming up. Fuelling. Managing nerves. Knowing when to push and when NOT to push.

After 18 years of racing, these are lessons I now share with the runners I coach.

If you’ve got a race coming up and you’re wondering whether you’re training in the right way, pacing correctly or getting everything you can from your fitness, let’s have a chat.

Some fabulous client results at the third race in the Hatfield 5k series hosted by

Mike Jeffs on pacing duty hit just under 19.30, a brilliant result.

I managed to get round in 22.28 this evening, off where I wanted to finish the series but on reflection a positive result.

But best news of all was Kerstin Prior hit a new 5k PB at 24.03 and has challenged herself to get under 24 minutes next time 😁
