RESILIENCE IS PART OF THE LESSON.

One thing I’ve become increasingly aware of this year is how difficult some children find it when something doesn’t come easily to them.

In karate, there will be techniques they struggle with.

There will be moments of frustration, disappointment, tears, mistakes and occasions when they simply don’t get something right.

And that is completely normal.

But these moments are also where some of the most important learning takes place.

Resilience isn’t about telling a child not to be upset. It’s about helping them understand that being upset, frustrated or disappointed doesn’t mean they should stop.

It means they take a moment, regroup and try again.

As parents, coaches and instructors, our natural instinct is often to protect children when they’re struggling. But sometimes the most valuable support we can give them is not to remove the challenge, but to encourage them through it.

“I know it’s hard. Keep going.”

“You don’t have to get it right straight away.”

“Mistakes are how we learn.”

“Try again.”

I’ve sadly seen an increasing trend this year where, when karate becomes difficult or a child becomes upset, quitting can quickly become the answer.

But learning to stay when something is difficult is one of the greatest lessons martial arts can teach.

Belts, kicks, punches and kata are only part of karate.

Learning perseverance, patience, confidence, discipline and the ability to cope when things don’t go your way are lessons that reach far beyond the dojo.

Sometimes the breakthrough comes just after the moment they wanted to give up.

Let’s teach our children that struggling at something isn’t a reason to quit. It’s often the very reason to keep going. 🥋
