You thought you had another few years left in your role.
You are annoyed because you thought you were safe for a little while longer.
You had somehow managed to survive each reorganisation that had gone before, but not this one.
Somehow they managed to get you this time.
Why couldn’t you have just held on for a few more years?
That would have seen you nicely into retirement.
Now you have to start again, just as you were heading into the autumn of your life.
The scary bit is that you really have no clue where to start. You can’t remember the last time you had an interview, let alone write a CV. It’s been years since you applied for a job.
What about this LinkedIn thing? Everyone is telling you that you need a profile, you signed up ages ago but really have no idea how to use it.
How much should you give away about yourself? You’re not sure if you want all your former colleagues knowing what you are up to.
I get it.
I survived reorganisation after reorganisation when I was working at British Airways, I just knew it was a matter of time before it would be my turn,
Guess what? Eventually, it came round to me.
Yes I was annoyed.
I realised very quickly that what they were doing was setting me free.
I was becoming institutionalised and I knew that I had so many skills and talents that I would take with me onto whatever I decided to do next. I also had so many working years left and I knew that I needed a new challenge, something that I could really get my teeth into, somewhere I could really make a difference.
The same can be true for you.
You can’t change the decision that has been made, just how you respond to it.
