A little bank holiday weekend trvia….

We all know a 12 bore but 𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 12-𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙖 12-𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙚?

It is one of those gunmaking terms we use almost instinctively — 12-bore, 16-bore, 20-bore, 28-bore — but its origin is rather fascinating.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢 𝙞𝙨 𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙪𝙥𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙.

If that pound were divided into 12 perfectly spherical balls, each of the correct diameter to fit the bore of the gun, the result would be a 12-bore.

Divide the same pound into 20 equal balls of bore diameter, and you have a 20-bore.

It also explains something that can initially seem rather strange: the smaller the number, the larger the bore. A ball for a 12-bore must be larger and heavier than one for a 20-bore, because only twelve of them — rather than twenty — make up the same pound of lead.

And the .410?

That is the exception most of us know. Rather than following the traditional system, .410 refers to the bore diameter in inches.

A centuries-old method of measurement, still spoken every day in the language of the gunmaker and sportsman.

Weather a little different for today’s sim day than last ! But all guns throughly enjoyed the day consisting of full English breakfast followed by two partridge drives with a cheeky rabbit thrown in for good measure on one ! Two high pheasant drives followed by lunch of home made chicken curry, jacket potatoes and home made cheese cake courtesy of Oakedge Kitchen.
