Match Report

Southport 2–0 Vulcan Jaguars

Southport faced another tough challenge at Larkfield, welcoming a Vulcan Jaguars side who arrived with three wins from three and plenty of confidence. The girls knew they’d need to dig deep — and they absolutely delivered.

First Half

The opening 30 minutes were a proper battle. Both teams were sharp, competitive, and carving out chances. Sophie threatened several times with her pace in behind, while at the other end Alexa was called into action with a couple of strong saves.

Neither side could find the breakthrough before the whistle, and the half ended goalless — a tight contest where momentum genuinely felt like it could swing either way.

Half‑time: 0–0

Second Half

Vulcan started the second half brightly, pushing Southport back and asking questions of the defence. But the back line stood firm, and Alexa continued her excellent form with confident handling and brave stops.

The breakthrough arrived in the 34th minute. Sophie burst down the right and drilled a hard, low cross into the box. Rosa, arriving perfectly at the back post, guided the ball into the bottom corner with composure.

1–0 Southport.

Just minutes later, Southport took control. A bouncing ball struck a Vulcan defender’s hand in the area, and the referee pointed to the spot. Rosa stepped up and smashed the penalty into the top corner — her second of the game and a huge moment for the team.

2–0 Southport.

The final 20 minutes mirrored the rest of the match: competitive, end‑to‑end, and full of chances. Southport were unlucky not to extend their lead, while Alexa produced several outstanding saves to protect her clean sheet.

Full Time

A performance full of grit, teamwork, and resilience. Three wins from three, only two goals conceded, and a brilliant platform to build on as the season gathers pace.

Parents’ Player of the Match

Rosa Kavanagh — A standout performance on the left wing. Opened the scoring with a composed finish and showed real confidence to bury the penalty. A huge boost for her today.

Coaches’ Player of the Match

Alexa Taylor — Outstanding throughout. Brave, assured, and decisive, making several crucial saves to secure the clean sheet. After excelling for her county yesterday, she followed it up with another top‑class display for her club.

Southport 2–1 Golborne Rovers

A hard‑earned home victory in the second game of the season

Southport returned to home turf for the first time this season, fully aware that today’s test against Golborne Rovers would be tougher than last week.

The girls took a few minutes to settle, struggling to find rhythm and tempo in the early exchanges. But once the breakthrough arrived in the 5th minute, everything changed.

After that quiet opening, Southport struck with quality. Sophie cut in from the right and produced a brilliant finish across the goalkeeper — a composed strike that lifted the team and the mood.

From there, chances flowed. Southport pushed forward, created multiple openings, and looked dangerous every time they attacked. The second goal came on 23 minutes: Paige fired a shot from the right, the keeper spilled it, and Sophie reacted fastest to tap home from close range.
2–0 and fully deserved.

Second half pressure

Golborne came out stronger after the break. They created chances, forced Southport deeper, and pulled one back on 35 minutes to make it 2–1.

The final 25 minutes were tense and competitive. Both sides threatened — Golborne hit the post and the crossbar — but Southport showed resilience, organisation, and determination to protect their lead and secure the win.

This week showed a very different type of performance compared to last weekend. It wasn’t free‑flowing or comfortable; instead, the girls had to dig in, defend bravely, and protect their lead under real pressure.

They showed the character, resilience and togetherness that will be needed throughout the season — and that’s just as important as the football itself.

Players of the Match

• Rebekah – Parents’ Player
Best player on the pitch. Tackled everything, won her duels, and carried the ball forward with real purpose.

• Grace – Coaches’ Player
Outstanding leadership at the back. Strong in her tackles, calm under pressure, and a captain’s performance throughout.

Southport 3–0 Sandgrounders

A confident, controlled performance to close out preseason — sharp passing, clinical finishing, and another clean sheet that underlines how ready this group is for the new campaign.

The girls wrapped up their preseason with a composed 3–0 win over local rivals Sandgrounders. After edging the previous meeting with a last‑minute goal, Southport came into this one determined to set the tone early.

The opening minutes were scrappy, but once Southport settled, their passing and movement began to flow. Patterns of play emerged, chances followed, and the home side took full control.

• Opening Goal — 1–0
A well‑worked corner broke the deadlock. Abbie swung in a dangerous delivery and Milly met it sweetly, guiding a clever volley into the net.
• Second Goal — 2–0
Just two minutes later, Southport doubled their lead. A crisp passing move carved Sandgrounders open, releasing Sophie, who poked the ball past the keeper with real composure.
• Third Goal — 3–0
Southport were now in full rhythm. Another through ball sent Sophie down the right, and she rifled a powerful finish into the far corner.

Sandgrounders rallied after the break, creating half‑chances, but Alexa and her defence stayed organised and firm. Southport continued to threaten — Phoebe, Darcy and Rosa all went close — and the scoreline could easily have been higher.

This was another assured display from a team growing in confidence.
15 goals in 3 games without conceding is a solid platform heading into the new season.

Southport moved the ball intelligently, defended with discipline, and showed they can hurt teams in multiple ways: set pieces, passing combinations, and direct running in behind.

🏅 Awards

• Parents’ Player — Milly
Opened the scoring, controlled the midfield, always found a pass, and sparked multiple attacks. A complete performance.
• Coaches’ Player — Londyn
Rock‑solid at the back. Calm, confident, and mistake‑free. Stepped forward with purpose and delivered a strong defensive display.

Thanks to FC Sandgrounders for the game and good luck for the coming season.
