Random practice isn’t always better practice.

Golf has plenty of variability, but it isn’t completely random. Before a tournament, we can know the hole lengths, par 3 distances, likely tee shot shapes, elevation changes, turf conditions and even the expected weather.

So rather than adding randomness just for the sake of it, can we use that information to make practice more representative of the golf we’re actually preparing for?

There’s been some really interesting debate recently around blocked vs random practice, and I think the big takeaway is a simple one….. context matters.

Keep the variability, but make it meaningful.

Random ≠ representative.

Chipping Arc Drill ⛳️

Saw this one on .golf and ! Thanks for sharing guys appreciate your knowledge 📝

How I set it up:

1. Place a ball on a very low tee.
2. Place a tee on either side of the ball, one grip away and slightly higher.
3. Add another one, a tee-length either side, slightly higher again.
4. Use two alignment sticks to give you a visual for your swing direction and target.
5. Your goal is to strike the ball without touching any of the tees.
6. Start with small, controlled swings and focus on swinging down your intended line.

The tees give you a visual representation of a consistent chipping arc.

If you can repeatedly move the club through the same space, you can improve your arc control → strike → ball control.

Save this one and give it a go next time you’re practising your chipping. ⛳️

1ft short is still 1ft! That’s better than 2 or 3ft! Practicing managing line & pace so the ball finishes close is the best way to eliminate 3 putts. Make yourself a 9 or 18 hole putting comp on your clubs practice green, make sure you use the whole green and don’t make all the putts too easy!

You can’t catch a train that’s already left.

And you can’t change a shot you’ve already hit.

But you can decide what you do next.

One bad shot doesn’t need to become two, three, or four.

Accept it. Adapt. Play the next one.

Which one are you? Give this feeling a go for more control!

So common in my beginner classes! One of the best ways to fix this is to understand that chipping, although a small motion with not a lot of steep, is still dynamic! Don’t be rigid, don’t focus on the face meeting the ball perfectly, start using your feet to balance and swing the club THROUGH the ball instead of AT the ball!

Controlling on demand your arc depth and low point on a stock chip from a good lie is the first step to having a full toolbox around the green

Such a common mistake! Standing in their normal full swing position, or just generally too far away with the lie too flat! Just inviting a flat swing and heel dig 🤦‍♂️ get your shaft 🆙 📈
