The school holidays are almost here, which usually means one thing on the Solent: busier waters.
If you are planning family days out this summer, it is worth making sure you feel confident before you leave the marina. A relaxed day on the water often comes down to the basics: knowing how to handle the boat, understanding your route, checking the weather and tides, using the kill cord properly, and knowing what to do if things change while you are out.
Good training is not about making boating complicated. It is about helping you feel calmer, safer and more capable when you have family or friends on board.

Rule 19 applies when navigating in or near restricted visibility.
When vessels are not in sight of one another, understanding how to apply COLREGS Rule 19 becomes essential. Radar can be a valuable tool, but only if you know how to interpret what it is showing you and use it properly as part of safe collision avoidance.
Our latest blog looks at navigating in and near restricted visibility with radar, including what skippers need to consider when visibility drops and decisions need to be made quickly.

Warm weather, lighter evenings and plenty of reasons to get out on the water.
Before you make the most of the summer, take a few minutes to check the things that can make all the difference: fuel, weather, tides, lifejackets, kill cord, VHF, route planning and a clear plan for getting home safely.
A bit of preparation gives you more confidence, helps keep everyone on board comfortable, and means you can enjoy your time on the water without second-guessing the basics.

New boat this summer?
Exciting, definitely. A little nerve-wracking? Also completely normal.
Every boat feels different once you are actually handling it, especially when you are coming alongside, reversing, turning in tight spaces or working with wind and tide. Even experienced boaters can need time to get used to a new set-up.
Own boat tuition gives you practical support on the boat you will really be using, in the places you will actually be using it. You can focus on the areas that matter most to you, from close-quarter handling and berthing to route planning and building confidence before taking family or friends out.
Get to know your boat properly this summer with tailored tuition from Ocean Sports Tuition.

Longest day of the year on 21st June.
If you’re lucky enough to be out on the water, enjoy the extra daylight, plan properly and keep an eye on the tides.
Summer boating at its best.

The Solent is one of the best places to learn, but it is also one of the best places to realise how much good training matters.
Changing tides, busy traffic, open water, marinas, moorings and weather that does not always follow the forecast all give you real experience, not just classroom theory.
That is what makes practical tuition so valuable.
At Ocean Sports Tuition, RYA training is focused on helping people become safer, more capable and more confident on the water. Whether you are taking your first steps with Powerboat Level 2 or building towards more advanced qualifications, the aim is the same: proper skills that stay with you long after the course ends.
