How a Colonoscopy Works - A colonoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a high-definition camera to examine the inside of the colon for inflammation, bleeding, polyps, or abnormal tissue. Air or carbon dioxide gently expands the colon for a clearer view, which can sometimes cause temporary pressure or mild cramping. If a polyp is discovered, the doctor can remove it using tiny tools passed through the colonoscope, and the tissue is then sent to a laboratory for testing.
