Helen discovered table tennis at secondary school when a new table tennis club was introduced. She quickly developed a passion for the sport, spending her teenage years competing in junior tournaments and continually improving her skills.
The fast-paced, skilful, and addictive nature of table tennis has kept Helen playing ever since. In 2021, she decided to gain her coaching qualification and has since found great enjoyment in coaching both juniors and adults, from complete beginners to developing players. She is passionate about helping others build their skills and confidence while ensuring every session is fun, friendly, and enjoyable.
Helen is also a strong advocate for womenβs table tennis. At Waterside Table Tennis Club, she leads a womenβs coaching session every Thursday evening, helping to create a welcoming and supportive community for women of all abilities. Her goal is to encourage more people to discover and enjoy this exciting, social, and highly skilful sport.

John has been a member of Waterside TTC since 2004 and became Head Coach in 2024. In recognition of his coaching achievements, he was awarded Table Tennis Englandβs South East Coach of the Year for 2024/25. He leads a fantastic team of coaches, each bringing their own skills, experience and passion to help players develop, improve and, most importantly, enjoy the sport.
John has competed for many years in the Southampton Premier Division and Senior British Clubs League for Waterside TTC. He has also been Hampshire County Senior Champion on four occasions. However, his real passion lies in coaching.
He says: βThere is nothing better than seeing somebody improve β whether itβs a player of any age taking their first steps in the sport, or a seasoned national or international-level competitor looking for advanced technical support to fine-tune their game and progress further. Helping players understand, develop and improve is what motivates me as a coach.β
Table tennis has been an integral part of Johnβs family life from a very young age. As well as competing regularly himself on the national tournament circuit, he has always supported his brother, David McBeath, throughout his professional career representing England at national and international level. This has given John a unique perspective on the sport, both on and off the table, which he can draw upon when coaching to provide players with thorough advice, guidance and encouragement.
John is immensely passionate about helping every player reach their full potential and is excited about the next chapter of his coaching journey at Waterside TTC.
