🏉 WORD OF THE WEEK 🏉

Our Word of the Week is back, helping anyone new to rugby get their head around some of the terms you’ll hear on a Saturday afternoon.

This week’s word is…

RUCK

A ruck happens after a player carrying the ball is tackled and goes to ground.

Players from both teams then arrive over the ball and compete for possession while staying on their feet. Once the ruck has formed, players can’t use their hands to pick the ball up from inside it. Instead, each side tries to drive the opposition back and secure the ball for their team.

You’ll see rucks constantly throughout a game. They’re a huge part of keeping possession and building an attack.

Basically, someone gets tackled, the ball hits the deck and suddenly half the team piles in to argue over whose ball it is. 😂

Next time you hear someone shouting “GET IN THE RUCK!”, you’ll know exactly what they mean.

South Shields suffered a heavy 17-65 defeat to Blyth at Brinkburn in their latest pre-season fixture, with the visitors running in 11 tries to Shields’ three.

A proud photo of the lads alongside the founder of Billy's Lifeline, a partnership that means a great deal to everyone at South Shields RFC.

Billy’s Lifeline was set up in memory of Billy Knott, who died by su***de in 2019. The organisation is dedicated to supporting families, friends and anyone affected by a loss to su***de, providing what is known as postvention support.

They know first-hand just how important good mental health and proper support can be. Their message is simple, but incredibly important: talk to each other, check in on each other and ask twice.

As a rugby club, looking after your teammates should never stop when you walk off the pitch. We’re proud to stand alongside Billy’s Lifeline, help raise awareness of the work they do and support a message that could genuinely save lives.

BILLY’S LIFELINE AWARD | JAY OXLEY

A very special moment for both South Shields RFC and Billy's Lifeline as we announce Jay Oxley as the winner of the Billy’s Lifeline Award.

This award was created to recognise someone who represents the values Billy stood for. Someone who looks out for others, makes people feel welcome, brings people together and is always there when somebody needs them.

It isn’t about who scores the most tries or who has the best game on a Saturday. It’s about the person behind the shirt and the impact they have on the people around them.

Jay embodies exactly what this award is about and is a thoroughly deserving winner.

The award also gives us another opportunity to keep Billy’s memory alive, continue conversations around su***de prevention and mental health, and recognise the importance of looking after your mates both on and off the pitch.

A proud and emotional moment for everyone involved, and something we hope will become an important annual tradition at the club.
