Based in the heart of Skelmersdale, West Lancashire College offers students a variety of courses to assist them in achieving their future career. West Lancashire College is a small, community based college, forming part of the NCG Group which is a large and successful national provider of further and higher education and apprenticeship training. Our college is home to around 3,500 students: made up of young people and adults of all abilities and backgrounds. West Lancashire College is at the heart of the local community, recognised for the work we do in supporting social mobility through a skills and careers focused curriculum that connects individuals to opportunities and enables people to fulfil their potential throughout their lives. Developed in 2020 and launched in 2021, our strategy is aligned to NCG’s Strategy to 2030 and sets out our role in the region to support our students, communities and our partners.

Aaron and Craig continued their friendship while studying our Carpentry and Joinery courses together 🪚🛠️

Although their journeys into the trade began for different reasons, they shared the same passion for developing their skills. Craig was inspired by his Grandad, who worked as a Joiner, while Aaron was keen to build a career in the construction industry and gain valuable hands-on experience.

Throughout their time on the course, they have worked side by side on a range of practical projects, developing their confidence, knowledge and technical abilities in the workshop. Their commitment, enthusiasm and teamwork have helped prepare them for successful futures in the construction sector.

Dylan went from strength to strength during his time of our Bricklaying Level 1 course, and proudly progressed all the way through to Level 3 🧱

Reflecting on his journey, Dylan said: "I chose Bricklaying to gain a deeper understanding of the trade and develop the practical skills I need for a successful career. I enjoyed working alongside my peers and learning from experienced tutors, which helped me build both my confidence and my bricklaying skills. I'm now enjoying employment in the industry and look forward to putting everything I learned into practice."

What a fantastic two days we’ve had with Matt and Jonathan from Loud Speaker, who delivered the Induction Workshop Project and helped bring the NCG Guarantee to life for our students! 😃

Through interactive activities, teamwork, engaging discussions and opportunities for reflection, students explored how the NCG Guarantee connects to their college experience and supports their future ambitions. The workshops encouraged confidence, collaboration and a positive start to the academic year, helping students make the most of the opportunities available to them at West Lancashire College.

Meet Lee, a continuing learner with NCG Online Learning. 🌱

"Through completing the course, I feel I have developed a stronger range of counselling skills and am now equipped with an even better toolkit to support the young people I work with."

With a professional background in equality, diversity and inclusion, wellbeing, and supporting LGBTQ+ communities, Lee wanted to build on his existing experience and learn new ways to support the young people he works with.

After completing the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, Lee developed a stronger range of counselling skills and gained valuable knowledge that he could apply directly within his role. The course's flexible pace, achievable deadlines and ongoing tutor support helped him stay engaged throughout his learning journey.

By building on his existing experience, Lee has enhanced his ability to make a positive difference to those who need support and has since progressed onto our Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills to continue developing his knowledge and skills.

Meet Olga, a previous learner with NCG Online Learning. ⭐

"One of the biggest benefits was being able to implement improvements in the workplace immediately as I learnt new concepts and approaches."

Looking to refresh her knowledge and develop new skills, Olga completed our Level 2 Certificate in Lean Organisation Management Techniques.

With dedicated tutor support and practical learning throughout the programme, Olga was able to apply new concepts and approaches directly within her role as a Quality Manager, helping drive improvements in the workplace as she learned.

To celebrate National Fitness Day, our Level 3 Sports students welcomed Frank Hughes, Chairman of Skelmersdale United Football Club for an insightful guest talk about the football industry ⚽☺️

Franked shared the club's history, reflected on previous successes, and provided a valuable overview of the day-to-day running of a football club. The session offered our students an excellent opportunity to broaden their understanding of the wide range of careers available within sport, including roles such as professional athletes, football coaches, club chairpersons and many others.

We kicked off the week by welcoming Belinda Mindset to campus, where she delivered an inspiring and engaging session for our Hairdressing students 🥰

Throughout the workshop, students explored the differences between mindset and mental health, fixed and growth mindsets, and the impact of positive and negative self-talk. They also learned about stepping outside their comfort zones, building resilience, practising gratitude and affirmations, as well as useful techniques for journaling, problem-solving, stress management and overall wellbeing.

Our students were extremely grateful to Belinda for her time and we can't wait to see her back at WLC soon! 💛
