Busquets didn’t beat pressure with speed.
He beat it by seeing the game earlier.
That’s the advantage I want young players to develop by recognising what’s happening, understanding their options and making better decisions before the ball even arrives.
Football intelligence can be developed.

Developing intelligent footballers beyond technique

A young player needs more than just drills to do at training.
They need to know what they’re working towards.
A clear player model gives development a destination so sessions, feedback and progress all have a purpose.
For my players, that means developing their intelligence, skill on and off the ball, and character through sessions that promote learning and joy, while continually moving from baseline to better.
Technique is critically important.
But technique without an idea is just an action.
I want players to see the problem, find the solution and have the ability to execute it.
Winning matters. So does competing.
But as a football coach, my responsibility goes beyond whether they win at the weekend or if they played well.
I want to help players become more intelligent, more skilful on and off the ball, and develop the character to deal with the challenges football puts in front of them as players and people.
So no matter what happens at the weekend, they still win every week.
By learning, enjoying the game and continually moving from baseline to better.
Football intelligence helps a player see and read the game, understand the situation, find a solution and deceive the opponent when needed.
Technique helps them execute it.
For me, intelligence comes first.
What would you choose, technique or football intelligence? 👇
Physical advantages can disappear as players develop.
But learning how to outthink and outplay your opponent can last forever🧠⚽️

There’s more to developing a young player than more touches, more drills and more intensity.
I help players learn what to look for, understand what’s happening and make better decisions, develop the knowledge and ability to solve problems on and off the ball, and build the character to excel as players and people, in an environment that promotes learning and joy.
If you’re looking for something different for your child, their first session is completely free with zero obligation.

My sessions are designed to develop intelligent, skilful players with great character who can think and play for themselves.
I want players to be challenged, make mistakes and experiment in an environment that promotes learning and joy.
Because the goal isn’t to make players look good in training.
It’s to help them perform when I’m not there.
