Recently. A mindful and enlightening walk for me, accompanying my favourite paddle boarder. Mindful sounds very woo-woo but for me it was to investigate my movement patterns. A physio used to say to me “muscles aren’t stupid”. I used to say that mine were. But in reality they only do what you tell them to. My nervous system was asking them to work in a way that over time was causing pain. So on my walk, I quietened a few things. I folded my arms and watched how I was rotating my ribs over my pelvis. I realised that I arch my back when I walk, so I stopped and lo and behold, I felt my hips begin to swing and take load and my rotation improved. My muscles weren’t stupid. They were just being misdirected! What does this translate to in yoga… well… a liberated spine, suddenly my legs feel free and more ability to find ease in my twists. I love my job. It’s a vocation! A calling!
