Why do so many horses prefer travelling backwards?🐴

At Equi-Trek, rear-facing travel isn’t just a design choice, it’s based on horse comfort and welfare.

Here’s why...
- Better balance – Travelling rear-facing allows horses to use their head and neck more naturally to balance during braking, acceleration and corners.
- Less stress – Research has shown horses travelling rear-facing had lower heart rates during transport, suggesting they were more relaxed than those travelling forwards.
- Improved comfort – Horses travelling backwards were observed resting more on their rumps to maintain balance, while forward-facing horses moved around more and carried their heads higher, indicating they were working harder to stay stable.
- Easier loading – Equi-Trek’s patented side-loading system encourages horses to walk into a bright, open space rather than a dark, enclosed opening, helping to make loading a calmer experience for both horse and handler.

5 Things to Check Before You Travel🙌🏻

A few minutes spent checking your horsebox or trailer before setting off can make all the difference. Here’s our quick pre-journey checklist:

✅ Tyres
Check the tyre pressure, tread depth and look for any signs of damage or uneven wear. Don’t forget the spare!
💡 Lights & Electrics
Make sure your brake lights, indicators, reversing lights and number plate lights are all working properly before you hit the road.
🔒 Ramps, Doors & Partitions
Ensure all ramps, partitions and doors are secure, locking mechanisms are working correctly and nothing is loose or damaged.
💧 Water & Travel Essentials
Pack plenty of fresh water for both horses and humans, along with your first aid kit, passports and any competition essentials.
🐴 Horse Area
Check that the horse area is clean, well-ventilated and ready for travel. Open windows and roof vents where appropriate, make sure fans are working and ensure bedding and haynets are secure.
