READY TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP WITH YOUR SAILING? ⛵

The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course at Scarborough Yacht Club this October, and places are limited to just 10.

Starting on Wednesday 7 October 2026, the course runs on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm, through to March 2027, with a break over Christmas and New Year.

You don’t need any previous qualifications to take part. Some sailing experience will help, but the course is designed to give you the background knowledge needed to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.

Over the course you’ll cover:

Navigation and chartwork
Meteorology
IRPCS and the rules of the road
Safety
An introduction to lights and night sailing

The course costs £250, including your course pack, charts, almanac, plotter and dividers.

And, if you’re not already a Scarborough Yacht Club member, temporary SYC membership for the duration of the course is included, so you can use the club and bar after class and get to know us while you’re here.

Only 10 places are available.

Pip Hare Ocean Racing is coming to Scarborough Yacht Club!!!

Some sailing stories stay with you long after the boat is back in harbour. On Saturday 10 October, we’ll hear a few of them from legendary ocean racer Pip.

Pip will talk about her sailing career, the Vendée Globe, and what it takes to keep going when you’re facing the sea on your own. We’re looking forward to welcoming her to the club for what should be a cracking evening.

During the 707 Sailing National Championships at Scarborough Yacht Club, our race night raised £680, which has been divided equally between the RNLI and Neuroblastoma UK.

Our support for Neuroblastoma UK has a very personal connection to the 707 fleet.

Andy Hughes, who sails on yacht Sharky, is Evie’s dad. Evie was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in December 2015, just a few months after her second birthday.

Thankfully, Evie survived and will celebrate her 13th birthday next Friday.

£340 has been donated to Neuroblastoma UK in recognition of Evie’s story and to support research into better treatments for other children diagnosed with the disease.

Thank you to everyone who came along to the race night, donated prizes, bought tickets and helped raise the money.

Eleven races. Ten to count. Four days of racing and just two points decided the title.

More T Vicar held their nerve on the final morning to finish on 33 points and take the 2026 707 Sailing National Championship!

A huge congratulations to Ben Williamson and the More T Vicar team, your 2026 national champions!

Flat Out finished the championship in style with victory in the final race, securing second overall, while Seaword completed a podium separated by just three points.

Close racing, difficult conditions, plenty of position changes and a title that went right down to the final morning. That is exactly what 707 racing is all about.

Congratulations to every crew who competed and thank you for bringing a proper national championship to Scarborough!

A championship like this takes more than boats, crews and a racecourse, it takes people and businesses willing to get behind it.

Final day of the 707 Sailing National Championship!

There is one last morning of racing in Scarborough before the 2026 national champions are crowned!

Here’s what’s happening on Sunday 6 September:

7.30am–8.30am: Breakfast cobs at SYC
9.30am: First warning signal
12pm–3pm: SYC bar open
12.30pm: Lift out
1.30pm–2.30pm: Beef brisket and Yorkshire puddings served at SYC
2.30pm: Final prizegiving

One final push on the water. Then it’s time to crown the champions! ⛵
