Susanna with Portugal U21's

In June, we announced that Salisbury player Susanna Ribeiro Gallagher had been selected for the Portugal Women's Under-21 squad.

This summer, Susanna joined the Portugal U21 Women's team for a training camp and match programme. We caught up with her to hear about the experience in her own words, including her training sessions and the fixture in which she played every minute.

Umpires Corner - Rule changes for 2026/27

England Hockey Rule Changes for 2026/27 – Quick Summary
Here we look at the rule changes coming in for the next season.
From 1 September 2026, the following changes will apply across England Hockey 11-a-side competitions:

1. Too Many Players on the Pitch
If having an extra player materially affects play, the captain must receive a Yellow Card.
If there is no material impact, the umpire may still issue a personal penalty.

2. Aerial Balls
Defenders may now challenge for the ball as soon as the receiver touches it, provided they respected the initial 5-metre safety distance.
Previously, defenders had to wait until the receiver had controlled the ball and brought it to the ground.

3. Goalkeeper Deflections
Clarification that a goalkeeper defending inside their circle may use both stick and body to deflect the ball over the backline or play it in any other direction.

4. Ball Hits an Umpire
Play will continues if the ball accidentally hits an umpire however if the contact gives one team an advantage, play is restarted with a bully.

5. Penalty Corner Protective Equipment
Defenders must remove protective equipment safely and as soon as possible after the PC.
Players may pass the ball from a free hit but cannot take a self-pass while still wearing the equipment.
If thrown equipment hits umpire or someone outside the field on or above the knee, the player must receive a Yellow Card.

6. Goalkeeper Equipment Size
Maximum permitted length of the left-hand protector (glove) increases to 365 mm.

Changes in the FIH Rules That England Hockey Is NOT Adopting by Default
Match Timing Changes
FIH now specifies 4 × 15-minute quarters with a 10-minute half-time.
England Hockey competitions will generally keep their existing match formats and timings.

Stopping Time After Goals and Penalty Corners
FIH rules now stop the clock after a goal or the award of a Penalty Corner.
England Hockey competitions will not apply this by default.

Biggest Impact on Games
The most noticeable change for players and umpires will be the new aerial-ball interpretation, allowing defenders to engage earlier after the receiver's first touch, while maintaining the 5-metre safety requirement.

Summer Junior Camp - 26-28th Aug

This summer, Jon Royce will be leading a three-day junior hockey training camp from Wednesday 26th to Friday 28th August.

Open to junior players from Year 5 upwards, this camp offers an outstanding opportunity for young players to develop their game under the guidance of one of hockey's most experienced coaches.

Jon is a senior FIH-qualified coach with international coaching experience across all age groups. He has previously served as Head Coach at Premier Division club Surbiton, leading them to a Premiership runners-up finish, and has held senior coaching and sports leadership roles at schools including Kingston Grammar School, where he was Director of Sport.

Building on the success of previous camps, this promises to be another fantastic opportunity for junior players to:

• Sharpen their technical skills
• Improve match awareness and decision-making
• Learn from some of the best coaches in the game
• Have fun and enjoy hockey with friends

Participants will be grouped according to age and experience level, ensuring that every player receives appropriate coaching and challenge. More experienced players will train separately from less experienced players, while all groups will have access to the full coaching team. Jon himself will work with each group throughout the camp.

The programme focuses on developing strong technical foundations and, crucially, applying those skills effectively within unit play and match situations.

Jon's coaching philosophy is simple:
"The way to enjoyment is mastery of the game. If you can perform the skills well, make the right decisions and be effective, you will feel good about yourself and the game. Training must have purpose, and that's exactly what this camp will provide."

Location: Salisbury Hockey Club, Wilton Road
Age Groups: U10-U16
Please note: This camp is designed for players with some existing hockey experience and is not suitable for beginners.

After last week's high temperatures put paid to all but one of our Summer League fixtures, the weather is still set to be warm this week. Thankfully, conditions look good for what will be the final round of another successful Summer League season.

This week's fixtures:

Tuesday: Gillingham Gladiators v Andover
Wednesday: Bourne Badgers v Avon Kingfishers
Thursday: Gillingham Giants v Warminster School
Friday: Wylye Foxes v Sarum Swifts

As the Summer League winds down, attention will also turn to England as they begin the knockout stages against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, hoping to kick off a long cup run. Kick-off is at 5:00pm, and the match will be shown live in the Clubhouse.

Why not come down and watch what promises to be a nail-biting encounter with friends before enjoying an evening of hockey? To allow everyone to catch the game, the Bourne Badgers v Avon Kingfishers fixture will start after the match finishes. The scheduled 7:00pm push-back may be slightly delayed, or considerably later should the dreaded penalty shoot-out be required!

Everyone is welcome, so come along, enjoy some hockey, grab a drink, and see if it's coming home.
