Another busy week of cricket. Both league and cup games for our senior and junior teams.

The u13 sponsored by Ozzy’s Cue Club travel to Blaydon on Wednesday for their DCB Shield play off semi final.

On Saturday the 1st team host Peterlee in DNECL Div 1 hoping for an improved finish to the season. The 2nd team travel to Kimblesworth & NE Tamils 1st in DNECL Div 3 intent on continuing their recent strong performances including last weeks great win against South Shields.

A busy Sunday schedule sees the u11 sponsored by Richard Reed Solicitors travel to Chester-le-Street in the the semi final of the DCB Bowl play offs. The Sunday 3rds travel to South Shields for their final game HLSCDL Div 1 game of the season. It’s a big day for the 2nd team as they go to Whitburn for the Hedworth Williamson Bowl Finals day where they play Hetton Lyons in the first semi final with a 10:30 start. Best of luck to them as they strive to bring back some silverware.

We start last Friday as our lasses continued their cricket journey with the visitor of Sunderland CC, the Ashbrooke girls proving to be a very powerful side in a big win, all money in the bank for our girls though as playing against such a good side can only improve their experience, individual performances of note from Nicola Hardy and Hannah Mason.
The Saturday games provided a win and a defeat with the 1sts travelling to Brandon and suffering a 7 wicket defeat, we scored 143 all out (Matty Dench 59 and Picks 37) and made a couple of early inroads into Brandon's batting but couldnt push on as the oppo cruised to victory in just 21 overs.
The 2nds fared better with a 60 run victory over South Shields 2nds at the 'hope.
Batting first we found ourselves 28-4 but a superb 58 from Henry Wallbank backed by an unbeaten half century from Jonny Errington and 35 from Mo Aslam propelled us to 204ao, we then bowled and fielded well to bowl out the visitors for 144 with Dom Hunter bagging 4-27 and Abdullah Ghuman 3-27.
Sunday saw our first team in action at Hunwick in the 15/15 playoff semi against South Hetton, and they subsided to a 3 wicket defeat, batting first we posted 115-5, Jenks leading the way with 33 and scores in the teens from Tom Coulthard, Scott Lawrence and Edd Finn, our bowling largely went round the park with Dom Hunter 2-21 and David Kirtley 2-23 notable exeptions. Sunday also saw our u11 Maroons progress into the semis with a hard-fought win over South Shields u12 girls, 2 wickets apiece for Alex Brown, Jacob Lawrence and Lucas Wright alongside some excellent fielding restricted the girls run making, when it was our turn to bat victory was assured with a solid batting performance, 21 from Jacob Lawrence and 20 from Jake Philliskirk the main contributors.
The u11 Golds couldnt win their QF however and so bow out of the competition, real progress from this bunch of kids though over the season, visitors Bill Quay winning by 24 runs despite 15 from Charlie Hayes and 16 from Oliver Lawson and a 2fer for Charlie in the Bill Quay innings.
As reported previously the girls were in tournament action at the Emirates and the 3rds completed a packed cricket day at the 'hope suffering an 8 wicket defeat at the hands of Littletown, batting first we scored 142, 20s from Phil Hutchinson, Cole Levy, Chris Waller and Mo Aslam but noone could push on to that big score, the runs were knocked off in 30 overs with Mo bagging both wickets to fall.
Monday was busy too with afternoon cricket at Seaham Harbour, batting first there were runs from Jacob Lawrence (20) and Arki James (12) , the hosts batting beautifully in reply to win by 17 runs, a superb wicketkeeping performance from Sanmay Salgudi the highlight of our bowling and fielding.
The evening brought u15 action as Silksworth visited and we knew a victory would make us league champions, batting first Sam Philliskirk was our only double figure score (39) as we posted only 93-9. Silky were cruising to victory at 87-3 before news filtered through that other results had gone our way and wickets taken could decide the title, up stepped spinner Thomas Turnbull to bowl out the impressive Lincoln Agnew, this was followed up by a marvellous Hattrick from Adam Malkin as 7 wickets were taken and the title secured before Silky secured a well deserved win. Massive congratulations to our under15s! A fabulous achievement with significant contributions from the entire squad.

🏏 MEGAFEST FESTIVAL 🏏

Our ladies softball team today competed in the annual megafest festival played at Durham’s Banks Homes Riverside Ground along side 36 other teams.

Playing in the cup competition we finished 3rd in our league beating Hetton Lyons by 1 run but losing to Swalwell and Dawdon.

In the play offs we beat Murton by 15 runs to enable a 5th finish overall which was great given the high standard of teams in the competition. Special mention to Abigail Veneear who bowled a maiden and wicket maiden late on to ensure the win went our way.

However as always it was a great team performance in all the games which is great to see.

Matty is a club legend and a deserved member of our Hall of Fame. He served the cricket section as Chairman, Treasurer and committee member with devotion and distinction over a great number of years. Throwback Friday as we reintroduce the weekly roundup.
We start in familiar territory this season with a defeat for the firsts, as despite posting a very winnable 198ao (Dan Pearson 64 and a fine 50 from Storesey) we succumbed to a 6 wicket defeat, the 2nds fared even worse, being rolled over for just 69, despite 30 from Abdullah Ghuman, eventually falling to a 6 wicket defeat at the hands of Coundon 1sts.
Junior cricket then takes centre stage as the u11s Golds travelled to Durham City for their play off and were in a perilous position before rain intervened (both Charlie Hayes and Oliver Lawson achieving double figure scores), however, an administrative error means we qualify for the next round.
Phils Sunday Academy side travelled to Whickham and suffered a narrow defeat as the hosts posted 196-6 from their overs, a couple of wickets each from the skipper and Adam Williams, in reply we fell 23 short despite an excellent 50 from Jack Wright and 20s from Cole Levy and Luke Gates.
Monday saw the u15s play their penultimate league game at home to posh Boldon and what a game it was! Batting first we found ourselves in trouble at 7-3 but rallied to 84-7 thanks to 27s from Luke Gates and Edward Poulton, this proved to be 8 too many for the visitors as a magnificent performance from all of the bowlers saw us home, special mentions to Sam Philliskirk for a wonderful one handed catch in the deep and 4-14 from Adam Williams.
Tuesday saw a defeat for our u9s hardball team in their first ever game, at the hands of a very strong Seaham Park outfit, runs for Jacob Lawrence and wickets for Matthew Lawson the high points.
Wednesday had the u13s at Ashbrooke and they triumphed to move into the semis of the playoffs. Batting first we posted a useful 120-3 with Ben (30) and Edward (35) Poulton both retiring not out, Sunderland fell 27 short with 2fers from Cooper Batey and Jake Philliskirk.
Thursday had the u9s in action again as they visited Dawdon and produced a great bowling and fielding performance to get the win. Charlie Reynolds magnificent 4-0 and a 3fer for Jacob Lawrence were matched by a superb debut performance behind the stumps for Harvey Finn.
Sadly the Thursday 3rds ended their season in runnersup position despite a convincing 52 run home win over Blackhall, 68 from Cal Lemon and 34 from Jack Wright propelled us to 155 which we defended thanks to 3fers for Ryan Perry and Davy Lemon, backed by a 2fer from Davy Gilbert. A fine season for the thirds as, on occasions, have been hit by unavailability and squad shortage.

Our ladies competed at Philadelphis today, sadly out of the medals (4th overall), but another step forward in their learning curve.
