6am hill sprints with these savages 🄵 whose idea was that Emma Connell-Smith

Those were more like hill crawls by reps 9,10

Something about running that early makes you feel like a smug bastard šŸ˜‚

Fulfilled a life goal of becoming a local legend on Strava haha

That’ll last until the good runners find my route šŸ˜‚

6 years today since me and JOHN DON | MEN’S FAT LOSS & FITNESS COACH ran a marathon.

Like a lot of people I got into running during lockdown. No 5 or 10k races to build ourselves up, we jumped straight to the main course being a marathon.

12 weeks training. No proper plan, just a marathon schedule I found in one of Ross Edgley’s books.

Route was the Kelpies to Town Head. Simple enough.

Stayed in a hotel the night before thinking the breakfast would set us up nicely. Nope. Choice between a full Scottish or an apple and orange. We took the fruit like idiots.

Fuel for 26.2 miles after that was Haribo, Lucozade Sport and hope.

We missed our cutoff and officially finished the distance outside McDonald’s in Maryhill. No money, no battery in either phone, everyone waiting for us at Town Head.

I was a bawhair away from getting wrapped in tinfoil. Tank was empty.

One of the boys picked us up and drove us to Town Head. Felt anticlimactic as f**k after what we’d just been through.

Today’s session was 18k, 8k of it at predicted race pace, sandwiched between two easy 5ks. Toughest run I’ve had all year.

I got a little greedy at breakfast this morning which didn’t make for great pre race fuel. 13 years of coaching and I still make mistakes.

It’s better to make them now during these practice runs to avoid f**king up on race day.

Both runs tested me the same way. Mentally, physically. Both times I finished.

6 weeks out from the half now, and days like today are exactly why the hard sessions still matter.

If you want to change how you look and feel:

Do the hard stuff.

Progress update on our Sharleen.

Week 20. 20kg down. 107.9kg to 87.9kg.

The weight is only part of it.

Couldn’t run a step when we started. Now she’s out twice a week, every week, and building towards the Glasgow Great Scottish Run 10k in October.

Strength is up everywhere. Last block finished on a 105kg sumo deadlift. This block it’s back squat and conventional deadlift, and the numbers keep climbing.

No shortcuts. No quick fixes.

In a world full of GLP-1s and peptides, Sharleen is proof the basics still work.

I’m not against the tools. I’m against how people use them. They starve themselves, ignore their protein, drop a s**t tonne of muscle, and end up smaller, weaker, malnourished versions of themselves.

Sharleen’s doing it properly. Eating enough. Training hard. Building muscle while the fat comes off. That’s why it lasts.

Week 20. Nowhere near done.

Train. Improve. Repeat.

When Kieran reached out he was struggling to make progress in the gym.

Jumping between random workouts and meals he’d seen on Instagram with no real structure and nothing to show for it.

We fixed that by keeping things simple.

Programming with clear progressions. Nutrition that was repeatable. No whipping out a chopping board at 8pm to start dicing onions. The only thing getting diced was this lad’s body fat.

We did all of this with Kieran working away almost every week including a few business trips to America. Never once used it as an excuse.

He even had the audacity to rock up to a HYROX doubles on 3 weeks notice and put in a tidy display.

Our goals now are clear. Get stronger, add muscle, get absolutely shredded.

Coaching isn’t about one off transformations. The aftercare is often even more important. What’s next. What turns this journey into lifelong habits.

Kieran’s words to anyone sitting on the fence. ā€œYou don’t need to be in shape to start coaching. Just start. That’s literally the point.ā€

The amount of times coaches hear ā€œI’ll start when I get a bit fitter.ā€ One year passes and that person is still in the same position. Following the same routine. Lifting the same weights. Making the same excuses.

Don’t let that be you.
