The Rotherham Charity Cup

A thrilling comeback had a dramatic finish as Westville beat Wombwell Main 3-2 with a last minute winner in the Rotherham Charity Cup on Thursday.
Wombwell went 2-0 up at half-time through former Westville defender Aaron Tate and a fine finish from Ryan Wingrove.
A Jordan Kershaw penalty ten minutes into the second half got Westville back into it and Wombwell suffered a blow when Tate was sent off for a second yellow card.
Westville levelled on 68 minutes through Kieran Hirst and in a fiercely fought game, it looked like penalties would be required until the last seconds when defender Jack Waldron headed home from one of Owens Sykes’ long throws.
It had been switched to a 4G pitch at Cudworth’s Dorothy Hyman Stadium when Westville Secretary Rob Furniss was proactive at lunchtime with their West Melton pitch having standing water following torrential rain.
In consultation with the Charity Cup and co-operation from Wombwell and the match officials (which included EFL Assistant Referees Danny Guest and Danny Jarvis), he decided to act and it was agreed to switch venues due to the risk of further rain leading to the possibility of a late postponement at West Melton.
Westville will now play Thorpe Hesley Village, winners of Thursday’s other game.
They beat Joker 3-1 at Flash Lane.
Adam Richardson had Thorpe in front, Louie Clark equalised before late goals from Jody Morley and Lee Ward out Thorpe through.
*The remaining two cup tie are next Thursday when AFC Lord Nelson play AFP Press Box at Soccer Centre (ex-Davy Utd) Prince of Wales Road whilst Groves Social entertain Swinton Ring O’Bells at Old Road, Conisbrough. Kick off 6.15.

Tonight’s Rotherham Charity Cup tie between Westville and Wombwell Main has been switched to the Dorothy Hyman Stadium at Cudworth with a 7.30pm ko.
Westville inspected their pitch at West Melton at lunchtime and with water starting to stand on the surface after torrential rain and more heavy rain forecast, they took the early decision to move the match.
It will be on one of the 4G pitches at the Stadium at Cudworth.
The refereeing team have been informed and agreed. The two Assistant Referees are EFL pair Danny Guest and Danny Jarvis.
The other Charity Cup tie tonight between Joker and Thorpe Hesley Village is at Flash Lane, Bramley, a ground with an excellent drainage record. That game has a 6.15 kick off.

CHARITY Cup quarter-finalists Wickersley CC have made it into the Mexborough Montagu Cup Final for a second successive season.
They won 2-0 in their semi-final against AFP Press Box at Denaby on Tuesday.
There was nothing between them in a tight affair and even less in terms of chances until Fraser Hartley edged Wickersley in front on 78 minutes and a smart finish from James Hardeman three minutes later settled it.
They play the winners of next Tuesday’s semi-final between Brinsworth DC and The Gate Inn at Denaby (6). It was Gate Inn who Wickersley beat in last season’s ’Mont’ final.
*On Thursday, the Charity Cup has two matches. Westville are at home to Wombwell Main at West Melton Recreation Ground whilst Joker host Thorpe Hesley Village at Flash Lane, Bramley. Both kick off at 6.15.

Tonight, the first of the Mexborough Montagu semi-finals sees holders Wickersley CC meet AFP Press Box at Denaby United (6pm).
The other semi-final is next Tuesday at Denaby when Rotherham Charity Cup winners Brinsworth DC play Gate Inn who were 7-1 winners over South Elmsall US in Sunday’s delayed quarter-final.
