Plym Vale win 4-3 on penalties

After two weeks of heavy defeats up Roborough, fun was the aim of the game today, as we drew positions out of a hat to select the starting team.
Henry Hodges was called into early action in between the sticks, dealing well with a few long range efforts.
He had a bigger task ahead of him not long after, when Jason Walker fouled his man a good yard outside the penalty area, only for the ref to point to the spot. The Plym Vale man stepped up, and right footed, saw his penalty that was destined for the bottom corner, tipped around the post brilliantly by Henry, 0-0 it stayed,and rightfully so.
Instead it was us who took the lead, when after good work from Gabe Langford, Charlie Meakin and Charlie Pannell playing a triangle out from the back, Pannell switched the ball over for Connor Thomas, who cut in on his left to deliver, for the oncoming Sam Courtney to force home, 1-0. Courts’ first goal since September 2023.
Into the second half, with some unfamiliar legs in unfamiliar positions we started to tire, our opponents equalised when a ball cut across the 6 yard box was missed by Sam Kenward, and finished for 1-1.
Kenners was soon back in his normal spot between the sticks however, after Henry caught a high challenge from a Vale attacker and was forced off nursing his shoulder, leaving us with a bare XI for the final 30 minutes.
Not long after, Dan Freeman sustained a broken collar bone after a challenge with Mr Nice Guy, and we were left with 10 men.
And then for the last ten minutes, Connor pulled up with a strain, and we were down to 9.
However those 9 men of Inter saw out the 90 minutes, and into penalties we went - of course, picking our taking order out of a hat.
Gabe scored first, before Kenners saved Vale’s first penalty, only for Pannell to see his spot kick saved, and Vale to equalise for 1-1.
Jason then scored his, Vale scored theirs, before Kenners struck the crossbar with his penalty, and couldn’t save Vale’s next, 3-2 to Vale.
Owen scored his spot kick, but Vale won it with their fifth, slotting home into the corner, 4-3 to our visitors in the end.
A much better and closer game than we were ever expecting with the XI we put out. Proof that we can work hard for each other and be resilient, something we must take into future games. Onto next week, a return to league action as we travel to Elm United.
