In the last post we started talking about situational awareness, the easiest In the last post we started talking about situational awareness, the easiest ways to start improving your situational awareness are to put your phone down occasionally.
We're often walking through the world while looking at a screen.
- Checking messages.
- Scrolling social media.
- Listening to something.
- Looking at directions.
Meanwhile, we're paying less attention to what's happening around us.
Try this simple habit:
1 Put the phone away when you're walking between places.
2 Look around you.
3 Notice the people nearby.
4 Notice the buildings and entrances.
5 Notice possible exits.
6 Notice anything that seems unusual or changes around you.
The more information you have about your surroundings, the more options you have if something unexpected happens. I saw a post in Crawley 2 weeks ago, a woman was near Tesco, a guy jumped the fence and ran towards her, she had earphones in and looking at her phone, it was only when a car flagged her that she became aware of the man running at her.
Situational awareness is about noticing what's happening early enough to make a better decision.
Give it a try today.
