Birds such as the kingfisher with long beaks I carve facing the opposite direction, I call them reverse heads, this enables the beak to be attached to the horn for strength ,normally all you see is a flash of blue but if you see one close up ,they are many beautiful colours

If you enjoy carving colourful bird’s heads you have to include the Red legged Partridge.
It certainly has some of the most colourful plumage of all game birds and the season for partridge is almost here.

The stags head is a very time consuming head to carve, to start with you need to acquire a rams horn with plenty of thickness on the nose,it is really the result of lockdown I did this one as time is the one thing I had

Nearly all game birds have colourful plumage,the red Grouse is no exception,all the feathers are engraved into the horn with a pyrograph and then coloured with humbrol paints so it is hardy for outdoor use.
