Golf coaching and club fitting have come a long way in 10 years. 🏌🏽‍♂️⛳️

We’ve got better launch monitors, better cameras, pressure plates, 3D systems, putting technology and more equipment data than ever before.

But I do wonder whether parts of the industry have started confusing more information with better information.

Golfers are now exposed to endless swing thoughts, “one move” fixes, shaft theories, optimisation numbers and technical explanations.

Sometimes the answer is genuinely complicated.

But sometimes it isn’t.

The best coaching and fitting should take complex information and make the golfer’s decision simpler — not leave them with another 10 things to think about.

Technology has undoubtedly improved the industry.

The question is whether we’re always using it to help the golfer, or occasionally using it to impress them.

A lot of golfers build their bag from the driver down.

But what if we flipped that thinking?

Most of your shots — and most of your scoring opportunities — happen much closer to the hole.

Start with the putter.
Get your wedge distances nailed down.
Make sure your short and mid irons cover the right gaps.
Then work outwards into hybrids, fairway woods and finally the driver.

From a custom fitting point of view, this makes a lot of sense too.

There’s little benefit having a perfectly fitted driver if you’ve got huge distance gaps at the scoring end of the bag, wedges that overlap, or clubs you simply don’t use.

A good bag isn’t about having 14 great individual clubs.

It’s about having 14 clubs that work together.

At Golf4U, that’s something we’re increasingly looking at during fittings — not just “what club goes furthest?” but:

What job does each club actually need to do?

How well does your current bag flow from 100 yards all the way back to the tee?
