A huge well done to one of my Swimmingly swimmers, Liz Dawson who competed at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in a boiling hot Nice last weekend and absolutely smashed the swim in a great time.

I’ve been supporting Liz with her swimming for quite a few years now. She’s had a few setbacks this year, so I was so pleased to get this message from her afterwards:

“The swim was so lovely. No panics/demons and my stroke felt good. I overtook loads of people.”

Knackered after just a few lengths of front crawl?

It’s very easy to think:

“I’m just not fit enough. I need to work on my fitness. I need to try harder.”

But trying harder isn’t the answer.

You’re only going to waste more energy and get more tired.

Instead, you need to work on becoming more efficient, so you move through the water more easily with less effort.

And that comes down to technique.

That’s exactly what we work on in my Front Crawl Intensive.

We use underwater and above-water video analysis to look at your stroke and identify the changes that will make the biggest difference.

And I don’t stand at the side shouting instructions at you — do this, change that, move this — until you’re completely overwhelmed.

I’m in the water with you, showing you what to do and helping you understand how to do it and importantly what it should feel like.

So when you go off and swim by yourself, you actually know what to work on to keep improving.

You’ll also leave with a comprehensive practice plan, so you know exactly what to do to continue to improve after the session.

I’ve now got ONE place left on my next 2½-hour Front Crawl Intensive at Canon Slade, Bolton on 15th September.

It’s very easy to assume that if you want to improve your front crawl, you need to change your whole stroke.

Usually, you don’t.

Often it’s one or two things you’ve stopped doing without even realising - small changes that can make swimming suddenly feel very different.

Like a slightly different head position, changing where your hand enters the water or the timing of your breath.

And that’s one of the things swimmers really enjoy about our Front Crawl Intensives.

We have 2.5 hours in the pool, just four swimmers, and plenty of time to look properly at your stroke, including filming above and below the water so you can see exactly what’s happening.

There are always lots of those “Oh! I get it now” moments.

Sometimes it’s discovering something completely new. Sometimes it’s finally understanding what a piece of advice you’ve heard before actually means when you put it into practice. And sometimes it’s rediscovering something you already knew, but had completely forgotten about.

And very often, it’s those seemingly small things that make the biggest difference.

Which is exactly what happened to Matt, the swimmer in this post.

If breaststroke is your favourite stroke, this is for you

This August we're running two dedicated breaststroke sessions for two different levels of experience.

You don't often see sessions devoted entirely to breaststroke, so whether you're just getting started or looking to fine-tune your technique, there's something for you.

🏊 Beginners

If you want to be able to swim more than a few strokes, if you wnat to laern to swim with your head in the water, or you'd simply love it to feel smoother, easier and less tiring, this session is for you.

Already swimming breaststroke comfortably? We'll help you fine-tune your timing, glide and efficiency so every length feels smoother and more effortless.

Bit of news: I'm speaking at the Beginners Swim Summit on July 15th. Free, online, for adults learning to swim or who are getting back in the water after years away.

Five teachers who specialise in adult beginners answer the questions most of us are embarrassed to ask.

I'm doing my bit on fear and panic in the water, why it happens, and what actually stops it.
