When golf fans around the world celebrate The Open they are also celebrating a region that has helped shape the history of the game.

Ayrshire is home to three legendary venues that hold a special place in Open Championship history.

⛳️ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 - The Birthplace of The Open Championship, hosting the very first tournament in 1860 and 24 Championships in total.

⛳️ 𝗥𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 - One of the most respected tests in championship golf, renowned for its challenging links layout and the famous ‘Postage Stamp’ 8th hole. Royal Troon has welcomed the world’s best golfers on multiple occasions, producing some of the The Open’s most memorable moments.

⛳️ 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 - Home of one of golf’s greatest-ever championships, the legendary ‘Duel in the Sun’ of 1977, when Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus battled head-to-head over four unforgettable rounds on the Ailsa Course. Set against Ayrshire’s dramatic coastline, Turnberry remains one of the most iconic venues in world golf and a place forever etched into Open Championship history.

Together, these historic courses tell the story of Ayrshire’s enduring contribution to the world’s oldest major championship.

Piersland House in Troon has always been a favourite for golf tour operators and golfing groups but did you know that they had more than just hotel rooms available?

Great to see Robert McIntyre visiting Ayrshire last week. The beauty of golf is that we can all follow in the footsteps of the greats. Many of us will have stood on a fairway or a tee or a bunker on one of the Championship links and thought this is where Watson played that iron to the last at Turnberry in the Duel in the Sun or Greg Norman driving into the bunker of 18 in the Troon playoff, or Henrik Stenson nailing the putt. What are your memories of famous holes and shots around Ayrshire?

Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club has always been intrinsically linked to the railways - it's location in Barassie in/adjacent to Troon is down to the railway that took early members from Kilmarnock to the links course. It is bounded on two sides of its triangular plot with the railway to Kilmarnock on one side and the main line to Glasgow on the coastal side. Seven holes flirt with the railway as Out of Bounds and over the past few years that history has been celebrated with the introduction of cut offs of iron railway tracks as tee markers. This has lead to the introduction of these unique bag tag and bottle openers being sold by the club pro! Great idea indeed!
