The boys have been back in action with 2 league games so far against Maghera and Dunloy ⚽️

They also had a friendly v Coleraine tonight, always a good battle and some great football on display from both sides 👏

Now time for game two. With them all exited to get underway after watching their team mates in the 1st game. Portstewart in their dark blue kits get us started the game and instantly played at pace, Portrush forcing some huge saves from John. We are patient and within 5 minutes Portrush failed to clear the ball which rolls into Che Ryan to tap home 1-0 Portstewart. Moments later a through ball from Charlie sends Che Ryan goal bound and makes it 2-0. Portrush settle their play and attack with real determination to which they shoot and put it past the Portstewart GK. Moments later a corner taken from Che, hits Portrush defender and creeps in an OG 3-1 Portstewart. Portrush make a couple of changes and works in their favour as little as 5 minutes, Portrush bring the game level with two brilliant goals 3-3 a game for anyone to win. Portrush attack after attack 4-3 Portrush - Portstewart remained not to drop the heads. They had a fantastic game, a true Portstewart team performance 👏

🤝Portstewart 2014s v Eglinton Youth

There’s no wind, no rain and 4b is not the worst pitch at the University so conditions are set for a good match. Eglinton kick off and it’s not long before they get an early shot away from range that doesn’t trouble Maitiú standing in for Koby in nets today. It’s a wake-up call which the boys heed and they’re soon on the front foot. It’s Frankie with first sight of goal and he gets a shot away but into the side netting. Encouraged, the Seahawks enjoy more of the possession and there are early signs of the system working with the ball coming forward into dangerous areas. It’s another unlikely goal that sets the boys back. An Eglinton corner gets an unfortunate deflection and goes in to open the scoring. Heads don’t drop though and the Seahawks are soon back on the front foot, probing down both flanks and getting shots away. There’s a nice understanding building up top between Elijah and Carl and both are setting each other up with decent chances. Despite enjoying the majority of the possession, it’s another set piece that gives Eglinton a second from a free kick. Encouraged by a flattering scoreline, Eglinton are energised and it takes some robust defending to keep them at bay. The boys settle and the forward pairing finally get their reward when Elijah plays the ball forward to Carl and he slots it in low at the near post to open the boys’ account for the season. Eglinton respond strongly and Maitiú pulls off some decent saves to keep the deficit to one.

Eglinton come out fighting in the second half and enjoy a better spell of possession. The boys weather it though and are soon attacking again. Elijah flashes one just wide and Frankie is looking very dangerous on the left side. It’s a ball from him that finds Cormac unmarked in front of goal and he fires the ball home to level the match. Tails are up now and the boys are playing some very nice football, dominating possession and having plenty of shooting opportunities. They are unlucky to concede a goal towards the end of the second half when a ball over the top falls to the Eglinton striker and his low shot proves unstoppable to restore their advantage. The boys play to the whistle and press hard for the equaliser, only to run out of time.

Another game that the boys would have won but for a couple of desperately unlucky touches. It feels like a win though, and the result does not reflect the maximum effort and commitment shown by every player.

🤝 Portstewart 2018 Youths vs Limavady Colts

And Harry Gregg small sided games are back at Score this week with all kids excited to get back on the pitch and see who their latest opposition is!

Portstewart got off to a strong start with good team work and plenty of talking between the players! Great to see everyone giving new positions a try although Max still protective of who gets into nets!

Limavady keeper pulled off some great saves off the line, and they didn't give up and kept battling for every kick of the ball but this time Portstewart came out the stronger side!

Great play from everyone but Luca was our POTM 🏆 this week - great touch of the ball, playing defensively when needed but not afraid to move away from the back when the opportunities came his way!!

🤝 Portstewart 16s Youths vs Newtowne

Always a highly anticipated fixture with end to end action and despite the finishing score it didn't disappoint!

Both teams got off to a strong start with it being clear no one was getting an easy time of it especially the keepers!

Portstewart had a number of opportunities to test the Newtowne keeper in the first half being unlucky with some excellent shots being kept out by either keepers or the crossbar! Finally the strong team work on the Portstewart side with a clinical finish from Luke edged them ahead!

Thinking that might be the start of the goals Portstewart kept the pressure on with shots coming from a strong free kick from Nate and powerful throw ins and corners. At the other end Darcy was tested with one particular shot from a Newtowne attack that just skimmed her gloves to deny an equaliser!! Keeping her head and the boys in the game, as always!!

The score line shows that defending hard was the aim of today for most of the match and only right that Nate got POTM 🏆

Well done Nate!! 💪

Portstewart starting the game with a real focus to attack from the 1st second, with some brilliant play into pockets of space. 5th minute in, a through ball from Charlie sets up No9 Jaden for a wonderful strike on goal 1-0 Portstewart. Desertmartain shown no heads dropped and attack from the restart. They break through after the clearence was intercepted and... Attack goal with a.. Rolls under the GK 1-1. 9th minute, some real battering in midfield see Portstewart break 3 v 1. Jaden again holding the back up well, shoots into the bottom corner 2-1. 15th minute, just before HT, Desertmartain equalised 2 - 2. HT team talk and more communication/patience instructed.

Final 10 minutes, Portstewart corner from Archie see's a run from out LB Sariah, takes a shot and rebounds back out for Sariah to attempt another and places it behind the keeper, 3-2 Portstewart. Portstewart now know it's in their hands. Desertmartain make a number of changes but Portstewart continue with pace and determined to add more succession of goals which sees Charlie score 4-2, Lochlan 5-2 in final 5 minutes. Desertmartain play through a counter and puts it beyond the keeper 5-3. Portstewart still eager in the final few minutes Jaden takes a powerful shot 6-3..Seconds later wins another challenge and makes it 7-3. Desertmartain break with pace but are dispositioned and a long ball reflects for a corner. Archie to deliver with quick thinking, he places the ball in the box with precision for Austin to tap home his first goal of the day and to make the final results ➡️ 8-3 to Portstewart C16.

🤝 Portstewart 2014s v Draperstown Colts

There’s a special weather system that waits for the Harry Gregg Small Sided Games and has no relation to the day before or after. Yes, it’s raining hard but spirits are good and the boys are ready for this first competitive test.

What a difference a few days and listening to your coaches makes. Having been resoundingly beaten by East End last time out, the boys might be forgiven for feeling apprehensive about today’s first real competitive match. Draperstown are no pushover and are a strong and physical team the boys might find hard to break down.

From kick-off, there is no sign of nerves and the boys are on the front foot straight away. Something has clicked since the last match and they are sticking to their positional responsibilities and watching out for each other. It’s Portstewart with the early chances, with several of the midfielders getting shots away on target. Out of possession, they’re pressing well and firm in defence when they need to be. With the Seahawks dominating possession in all areas of the pitch, it’s a sore blow when a speculative long shot flies over Koby in nets - not a thing he could have done about it and the boys are desperately unlucky to come to half time a goal down but massively bossing the possession stats and putting together some lovely passages of play.

If anything, the second half is even better organised and the Seahawks are far and away the better team, holding and ball and moving it around with enterprise and purpose. There is none of the panic evident in previous matches. Goal chances come regularly and the boys are unlucky not to get the one clear chance they need to level the match. There is some good play in all areas of the pitch and the ball is moved around freely to create frequent half-chances. Resolute in defence and keen to come forward, there is some very nice footwork and control in the midfield and opportunities to strike are plentiful. The boys are unlucky, having dominated possession all match, to come to the final whistle a goal down.

That’s football. A super squad performance from everyone today that deserved a better result. Signs today prove there is no doubt there is a strong team being built here and the boys were buzzing despite the result and the driving rain. On to the next one.
