What actually happens on a BUCS Wednesday? How do you compete and represent University of Portsmouth?
Most of our competitive team sports matches happen on a Wednesday afternoon. Your calendar is kept free of lectures and seminars, so you can compete without missing anything for your course.
If you’re selected for a compete team, through trials at Give Me Sport, there’s a few weeks of training before the season begins. For most teams, you’ll have around 5 home matches and around 5 away matches, across the uni year.
Most of our teams compete in the South Eastern region, so for away games you’ll be going to London, Chichester, Essex, and other unis in the surrounding area. Travel to away games is included in your compete membership.
Our clubs have multiple teams, who compete in different BUCS Tiers. There’s promotion and relegation up for grabs so every match counts! There are also knockout cup competitions for most teams.
You’ll have regular training with your team, and all of your training sessions, compete kit and coaching is included in your membership. Check with the club if you aren’t sure on the specifics, as personal items for example football boots, gum shields aren’t included.
Joining a sports club is a great way to make friends at uni as you’ll have a regular schedule, compete together and meet loads of new people through socials and events, often with other Team UOP sports clubs.
It might seem a bit daunting but our Team University of Portsmouth club leaders get loads of training on how to make your experience as a sports club member as enjoyable as possible.
And it’s not just BUCS Wednesdays for our sports clubs, as lots of teams compete on the weekends or at regional and national competitions. Come to Freshers’ Fayre and Give Me Sport to meet our sports clubs and find out more 💜
