Kinsley Boys 7–2 Sands United

Today the lads travelled to Norton to face league newcomers Sands United.

The instructions were simple: keep it tight, play it simple and don’t force the game.

I might as well have been talking to a brick wall.

A long ball was left unchallenged, the Sands lad flicked it into his teammate and they opened the scoring inside the first five minutes. At that point, I was thinking this could be a very long morning.

To the boys’ credit, they pulled it back almost straight away.

A free kick was awarded on the edge of the area and Cory Stables hit it low. The keeper saved, Owen Reynolds followed up and was denied again, only for Joe “Gazza” Gascoigne to be on hand to put the rebound away. 1–1.

Akelle then found the net, although apparently he was judged to be offside about 15 times before finally getting one to count! 2–1 Kinsley.

Kian Cullimore added another assist when he set up Dylan Ellis, who describes it as a “40-yard screamer” — although the rest of us might have a slightly different description! Either way, it found the back of the net and Kinsley had a 3–1 lead.

You would have thought everything was going to plan from there.

But it wouldn’t be Sunday League football without a spanner being thrown into the works.

Another ball into the box wasn’t dealt with and Sands pulled one back just before half time. 3–2.

For the first 15 minutes of the second half, it certainly looked like it could be one of those days. Sands looked dangerous and Kinsley just couldn’t seem to get going, with the equaliser looking increasingly possible.

Frustration started setting in and even spilled over onto the sidelines. Coach Simon Gerrard took his anger out on the ball bag, nearly knocking out a few of the Kinsley faithful with a stray ball.

The referee promptly awarded Simon a red card and told him to stand somewhere else.

I think the ref must have thought Simon was disagreeing with one of his many on-field decisions, but I’ve been assured by Simon that the two incidents were completely unrelated. 😂

Dylan and Ollie then had to leave early, so Charlie Binder and Kailub Robinson were introduced.

And that proved to be a turning point.

Reynolds cut in from the left and found Kailub Robinson, who rounded the keeper and made it 4–2. Finally, a bit of breathing space.

Caiden Burton then finally did something positive for the team — his words, not mine! — setting up Kailub for his second and Kinsley’s fifth.

Kailub then broke through the Sands defence and, rather than going for his hat-trick, unselfishly set up Troy Ryalls to score his first goal of the season. 6–2.

Kailub wasn’t finished, though.

He completed the scoring with his third goal of the afternoon, completing a superb hat-trick and making it 7–2.

Obviously, we’re pleased with the result and seven goals is always something to celebrate, but if I’m being honest, I felt we never really got out of third gear today. The pitch certainly didn’t help, although it was the same for both teams.

A tireless performance from Gazza today. He worked his socks off and deservedly took home the Man of the Match award.

Honourable mention: Kailub Robinson for a superb hat-trick and a huge contribution off the bench.

Kinsley Boys 2–2 Yorkshire Grey

Back-to-back fixtures against Yorkshire Grey — because apparently once wasn’t enough! 😂

Both teams were originally due to face different opposition this week, but with both clubs taking part in a charity tournament, it meant we were treated to a repeat fixture against the Greys.

And what a game it was.

A tough, competitive contest from start to finish and a great advertisement for Sunday League football, with neither side willing to give an inch.

It was Yorkshire Grey who broke the deadlock. A through ball found their number 10, who calmly slotted the ball away to make it 1–0.

The boys responded brilliantly and found their way back into the game. A lovely ball from Cory Stables found Akelle, who kept his composure and finished well to make it 1–1.

The second half followed much the same pattern as the first — plenty of effort, plenty of battling and neither side giving anything away.

Again, it was the Greys who found the breakthrough, with their number 9 producing a nice finish to put them back in front at 2–1.

Once again, we found ourselves chasing the game, but credit to the lads — we just never give up.

A few changes were made… and then made again after a couple of the lads had to come back off because they could apparently still taste last night’s Guinness! 🍺😂

Just when we were starting to think “maybe it’s just not going to be our day,” up stepped Joe “Gazza” Gascoigne, who found David Akelle, and Akelle made no mistake, grabbing his second of the game to bring us level at 2–2.

Both teams had chances late on to sn**ch all three points, but neither could find that winning goal. The final whistle went with the scores level, meaning the points were shared.

2–2 — a fair result in what was another cracking contest.

Credit to the lads once again. We never gave up, kept battling until the final whistle and take our point.

A performance full of hunger, desire and determination. Deserved recognition for a top display.

Special mention also to David Akelle, who was a nuisance for the Greys all afternoon, finishing with a goal and an assist.

⚽ KINSLEY BOYS 2–1 YORKSHIRE GREY ⚽

The season opener is finally here!

The moment we’ve all been waiting for — Sunday League football is back! It’s been a long summer. Some say it’s been hotter than Satan’s balls, but finally, we’re back where we belong!

The boys made the trip to Cantly Park to face Yorkshire Grey, a team I’m sure we play every opening game of the season! 😂 After a really positive pre-season, hopes were high and the lads were raring to go.

From the first whistle, the game was exactly what we expected — two experienced fighters sussing each other out, testing one another and refusing to give an inch.

Kinsley nearly broke the deadlock when Owen Reynolds threaded a brilliant ball through to Akelle, sending him one-on-one with the keeper. Akelle tried to round him, but credit to the Grey keeper, he managed to get a hand to the ball and force it wide.

The deadlock was eventually broken halfway through the first half. A 50/50 challenge fell kindly to a Grey attacker, who spotted Kailub off his line and produced a fantastic lob from around 25 yards. 1–0 to Yorkshire Grey.

The boys pressed and pressed for the remainder of the half, although at times we were relying more on luck than skill! 😂 Despite having plenty of possession and moving the ball around well, we weren’t creating enough clear-cut chances or really testing their keeper.

Half time came with the score still 1–0 to the Grey.

The message at half time was simple — we needed to get the ball through the thirds more often, create more chances and start putting their keeper under some serious pressure. Otherwise, we risked letting the game get away from us.

To their credit, the lads took the message on board.

After a fantastic attack, the ball eventually fell to Jake North, who unleashed an absolute thunderbolt straight into the onion bag! 💥🥅

1–1!

It was nothing more than we deserved.

The game continued in the same fashion as the first half — a proper battle, with neither side willing to settle for a draw. We introduced some fresh legs and continued pushing for that all-important winner.

And with around 15 minutes remaining, Joe Gascoigne found Akelle, who kept his composure and drilled the ball into the bottom-right corner!

2–1 KINSLEY! 🔥

The final 15 minutes felt like an eternity. Yorkshire Grey pushed hard, probing the Kinsley defence and looking for an equaliser, but the boys stood firm.

And today, the defence were absolutely outstanding. Every player dug deep, battled for every ball and refused to let the Grey back into the game.

Finally, the referee blew the whistle…

A massive test to start the season against a very good, physical Yorkshire Grey side who are always a danger and, as expected, never gave up.

⭐ MAN OF THE MATCH: JAKE NORTH ⭐

Jake covered every blade of grass today and thoroughly deserved the award.

A very close second was Rocco Brown, who was an absolute stalwart in the back line and put in a brilliant defensive performance.

And a special mention to Eddie Anderson, who continues to impress every time he steps onto that pitch. 👏

A fantastic way to start the season.
