Upton United U13 Girls 7-0 Edenthorpe FC

The Upton United U13 Girls got their season underway with a 1st Round cup match in the Doncaster League Trophy.
It was a scrappy first 10 minutes with neither team settling and able to take control of the game. Upton always looked the more threatening, Aliza having the first real chance of the game when Seren sent a brilliant cross-field ball for Aliza to chase down, she turned the last defender and sent a shot narrowly wide of the target. That calmed the Upton team and the girls started playing the football that saw them win the league title last season. New signing Rosie battled her way through the line from halfway, she was stopped just outside the box but the clearance only found Seren who opened the scoring with one of her signature goals, a rocket from outside the area lobbing the keeper. Rosie went close to adding a second moments later, a calm bit of defending from Harriet saw her play the ball back to Eleanor who hit a great clearance over the half way sending Rosie through on goal, the keeper did extremely well to make the save. Seren added a second following the corner, Willow found her at the edge of the area and a hard low shot found it's way through the crowd into the bottom corner. Moments later Rosie pick-pocketed the last defender on the half way line before darting away and slotting calmly home to go 3-0 up. The goals kept coming, this time Rosie playing Aliza through on the left and in a similar attempt to her first, beat two defenders and hit an outrageous shot from out wide on the half-turn lobbing the keeper and hitting the top corner. Upton added the 5th just before half time, Willow holding off two defenders to find her way down the right before squaring the ball to Rosie, her shot needed an excellent save but Aliza was on hand at the back post for the rebound, cutting it back into Rosie who didn't miss the second chance.
With the game all but decided, the second half was Upton's chance to show some game management and they did exactly that. Some brilliant defending from Isla, Scarlett and Saran kept Edenthorpe at bay. Edenthorpe were starting to connect passes and managed to get in behind, but their striker couldn't get his shot away before Saran showed blistering pace to recover and bring the ball out. Upton's 6th goal came 10 minutes into the second half, Amy Grace winning the ball in the middle and threaded a beautiful pass through for Halle who played the long pass out wide for Violet, after showing her Lightning McQueen pace to meet the ball, she played the first time pass back to Halle who clipped it over the keeper. Upton didn't let up, Rosie completed her hat-trick after a long ball from an Eleanor goal kick cleared the defence, Rosie bore down on goal, turned the last recovering defender and fired it in. Edenthorpe's best chance of the game came shortly after, a brilliant bit of football saw a 1-2 pass get behind Upton's lines and the striker fired a curling shot to the far post but Eleanor, who'd had a relatively quiet game up until then, was alert and made a brilliant diving save maintaining her clean sheet.
A brilliant display from the girls, every player doing their job, playing smart and confident football. Onto Round 2 and set themselves up superbly for next weeks' league opener.
