Plymouth Sound National Marine Park

Have you ever seen a car that follows the tide?🌊

Four Ford Fiestas are being transformed into extraordinary works of public art as part of Intertidal, a new citywide commission by internationally recognised British artist David Cotterrell.

The cars have been completely re-engineered with hidden reservoirs, pumps, sensors and digital controls, allowing the water inside each vehicle to rise and fall in response to Plymouth’s tides.

The first four can be found at Tinside Lido - Plymouth Active, Mount Batten, The Box Plymouth, and Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park (Official). They’ll then move to new and unexpected locations across Plymouth throughout September and October.

The artwork is part of Sea for Yourself, a cultural programme connecting people with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park through art, creativity, participation and digital innovation.

At its heart is a simple question: where does the sea really stop?

So, if you spot a Ford Fiesta around the city, take a closer look. It might not be quite as ordinary as it first appears.

🎉 It's a wrap! One of our fantastic community-led Blue Sparks projects, Turnchapel History Group, recently celebrated the completion of their heritage project with a special community party.

Through meet-ups and shared conversations, the group has helped bring Turnchapel's rich history to life, exploring stories of shipbuilding, quarrying, sea pilots and so much more. Along the way, they've opened up local conversations, strengthened community connections, and inspired a deeper appreciation for local heritage.

Not only that, but they've also created beautiful murals inspired by everything they've learned throughout the project. It has been an absolute pleasure to fund this project and watch it grow. A huge thank you and congratulations to Turnchapel History Group for delivering such a special piece of community heritage work.

We'd also like to thank Jess and Millie for creating the Blue Sparks concept and shaping it into what it is today, and of course Jon, whose mentorship helped support this project every step of the way. 💙

📷 World Photography Day is the perfect chance to celebrate one of the brilliant projects funded through our Blue Sparks programme.

Over 15 weeks, Fotonow CIC supported young people to explore their connection with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park through photography, film and creative storytelling. From photo walks on the Hoe to a final exhibition at Plymouth Arts Cinema, they shared fresh perspectives on Plymouth’s blue spaces while building skills, confidence and new friendships.

One participant said the project “taught me how to use cameras and made me lots of friends”.

Thank you to Fotonow CIC, Plymouth Arts Cinema, the National Marine Aquarium, the volunteers and, most importantly, the young people who made this project amazing!
