No gym? No problem!
You donโt need a gym to complete a land training session that supports your swimming. Access to weights and equipment can help, but it isnโt essential!
Thereโs plenty you can do with limited space and equipment. The key is having a clear purpose and understanding how the exercises support your swimming.
Donโt let a lack of facilities, structured club sessions or coaching guidance stop you from adding S&C to your weekly programme.
Get in touch for advice, support or to discuss our online S&C programming.
Sighting is essential in open-water swimming, but the same technique is also useful during middle-distance and distance pool events when checking the lap-counter board. In both situations, lifting the head incorrectly can disrupt your stroke, increase drag and slow you down.
A common mistake is lifting the head too high and keeping it there while trying to process what you can see. Another is breathing before sighting, which can leave your mouth open and increase the chances of swallowing water, especially in the sea!
In this reel, I demonstrate two simple drills that can help you develop a more efficient technique for both open-water sighting and checking the lap counter:
๐ Water polo stroke: Become comfortable with the change in your head and body position.
๐ Crocodile eyes: Practise keeping your mouth in the water while lifting only your eyes above the surface.
Once you are comfortable with each drill, add the breathing and practise the correct sequence:
Sight first. Then turn to breathe.
Keep your head low and make the sight a quick glance. Process what you have seen once your face returns to the water, then adjust your direction while continuing to swim.
