Ashtanga Yoga Plymouth

Ashtanga Yoga Plymouth Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic and energetic form of yoga in which postures are linked in a flowing sequ you just need to start.

My aim is to make Ashtanga Yoga accessible to everyone in friendly, authentic, inclusive, affordable classes, helping you to discover all the endless benefits to both mental and physical health of this very traditional and innately wise practice. The focus on linking breath with movement as well as 'gaze points', means the senses are actively drawn inward allowing practitioners to move through the Ashtanga primary series with complete awareness and presence, transforming the physical practice into a 'moving meditation' allowing us to reach a deep state of concentration and cultivate an awareness of the subtlest physical and mental aspects of our being.

The Benefits of Ashtanga Yoga
Improve flexibility and posture
Increase strength of bones, joints
Increase muscle tone
Improve cardiovascular fitness, lung efficiency
Reduce body fat and increase metabolism
Regulate blood pressure
Reduce stress, anxiety and depression
Increase focus and creativity
Improve quality of sleep
Increase happiness! I discovered Ashtanga Yoga quite late in life, and immediately noticed that yoga differed from other forms of exercise in the way it had a positive effect on the emotional as well as the physical state. As a secondary school teacher for 25 years, I felt it a natural progression to train to teach yoga and I was privileged to be able to train with Brian Cooper, renowned author, founder of The Yoga Alliance UK, and one of the best Ashtanga Yoga instructors in Europe. I love being able to share this practice and to watch students progress. The great thing is that it is accessible to everyone … you don’t have to be flexible or have any experience to start ..

REFLECTION ✨️ When we practice Ashtanga Yoga, every posture becomes a quiet mirror. While the physical practice builds strength and flexibility, the real work happens internally...

How we meet ourselves on the mat is often a direct reflection of how we navigate life off it.
Ashtanga yoga isn't just about strength or getting upside down - it’s about observing our natural flow, finding stillness in the middle of effort, and learning to balance it all

Ashtanga teaches us to navigate tension with grace, stay grounded when our world turns upside down, and respect the natural rhythm of effort and rest.

Whether you’re looking to build focus, explore your physical edge, or simply find a moment of clarity and calm, you’re so welcome to join us 😀

✨Ashtanga Yoga: A Practice for Body, Mind & Soul ✨

Practicing Ashtanga yoga leaves us feeling happy, healthy, and deeply calm ☺️

In the West, yoga is often seen as just physical exercise. But in reality, the practicing of postures is to make us physically strong and flexible, freeing the body from any physical problems, which in turn frees the mind.

Ashtanga invites us to turn inward, focusing not on the world outside, but on what is happening within. The internal focus and rhythmic repetition of the series has a unique way of bringing us back to the present, which is all we truly have. It shows us that each moment is unique and invites us to embrace it….

And that is why for so many dedicated practitioners Ashtanga yoga never gets boring ☺️

Why not join us for a grounding, cleansing, calming yet uplifting Ashtanga yoga practice….

Worried about fitting into an Ashtanga Yoga class? Don't be 😊

We’ve all walked into a new yoga class wondering what to expect. Will everyone else be younger, stronger, bendier, or know exactly what they’re doing? Will there be anyone like me?

The truth? Our Ashtanga community is wonderfully diverse. It spans decades in age, every level of experience, and a huge variety of backgrounds.

Recent classes have included a local PT, retirees, a physiotherapist, a runner recovering from injury, an Indian student who enjoys my classes because they remind them of the yoga they experienced growing up in India, complete beginners, and students who have been coming for over a decade.

And often, you would never know.

Every Body is equal, but every body is unique.

That’s the beauty of Ashtanga Yoga. Because the sequence stays the same, there are no surprises. You can switch off the external noise and make each posture your own - whether you’re building strength, adapting to life changes, or just showing up as you are today.

Our goal isn't performance. It’s moving the body, steadying the breath, and calming the mind.

So if you're wondering whether there will be someone like you in class, there's a very good chance there will be.

And if there isn't, you'll still be welcomed exactly as you are 😊🧘‍♂️🧘‍♀️🙏

CORE STRENGTH 💫
Ashtanga Yoga massively strengthens the core, in a way that’s intelligent, sustainable, and transformative. It’s not about flat abs. It’s about stability, balance, breath, and freedom of movement. When people think of “core work,” they picture sit-ups or sucking in the belly. But in Ashtanga Yoga, core strength is more subtle and profound.

The core isn’t just the abs - it’s a system of muscles at the front, sides, and back that stabilise the spine and pelvis like a natural cylinder.

Ashtanga yoga builds functional strength dynamically, breath by breath….

✨Standing sequences build steadiness from the ground up, lifting the pelvic floor

✨Forward folds engage abdominals to protect the back

✨Backbends require powerful support from both the front and back body.

✨Twists integrate obliques with spinal muscles in dynamic spirals.

✨Vinyasas and transitions demand deep abdominal engagement.

The core engagement arises through the breath, bandhas, and flowing movement. It’s never about gripping. It’s about channeling energy, intelligent activation of the bandha, stabilising from within, keeping the body both strong and fluid

Ashtanga reminds us core strength isn’t aesthetics, it’s integration. With steady practice, the body feels lighter, movement becomes more controlled, and breathing more expansive.

Next time you’re on the mat, notice the pelvic floor lifting, the quiet tone of the abdominals, the support from the back, and the expansion of the diaphragm. That’s true core strength - subtle, balanced, and transformative 💫

Ashtanga Yoga is definitely not about perfect flexibility, picture-perfect postures, or hitting an aesthetic goal….it’s all about finding a little inner quiet amid the noise.

As Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras put it, the core of yoga is Chitta Vritti Nirodha: stilling the fluctuations of the mind. Finding peace.
The strength, flexibility, and post-practice glow? Those are just the extra perks along the way.

Why not move, breathe, and quiet your mind with us…..Tomorrow at 6:15 PM in the lovely Parish Centre of Stoke Damerel Church

Whether you're looking to build strength or just clear your head after a long day, all levels are welcome 😀🧘‍♀️🧘🏻‍♂️🙏

The purpose of an Ashtanga yoga posture isn't the posture itself. It's about preparing the body and mind for stillness.

In the Ashtanga tradition, physical movement (āsana) builds the stability, strength, and ease required for seated meditation.

When the body settles, the breath slows. When the breath slows, the mind has space to quiet, creating space for mental clarity, inner peace, and resilience both on and off the mat.

Why not join us tomorrow at 6pm at Compton Church for a balancing, calming yet revitalising session and discover the endless benefits of this traditional, innately wise practice for yourself….Every Body welcome 😀🧘‍♀️🧘🏻‍♂️🙏

Ashtanga yoga is not about the way it looks, it’s all about the way it feels….☺️

Some people think Ashtanga yoga is a challenging, powerful practice but, in reality, it is highly adaptable, offering numerous modifications, suited to differing needs, making it accessible to all abilities.
And I always teach in a versatile and inclusive way that caters to all levels.

Regardless of physical ability, Ashtanga yoga strongly emphasises breathing, bandhas, and drishti.
This internal focus gives strength to the external postures and is accessible to everyone, allowing both beginners and more advanced students to have a meaningful experience.

I teach with an emphasis on these principles, and I believe they are more important than the actual postures, that there is no external value in any posture.
So it doesn’t matter whether you bind in a posture, take full lotus, touch this or that…That’s not what Ashtanga is about.

The real benefits come from breath, rhythm, and repetition - quieting the mind, balancing the body, and building inner strength.

Whether you are stepping onto the mat for the first time or deepening an existing practice, every class meets you exactly where you are.

Ready to clear your mind and move your body?

Join us tomorrow at 6.15pm in the lovely Parish Centre at Stoke Damerel Church for a grounding and cleansing, calming yet uplifting Ashtanga yoga practice…Every Body welcome 😀🧘‍♀️🧘🏻‍♂️🙏

✨ A little reminder...
Your yoga mat isn’t a place to perform.
It’s a place to come home to yourself.

Ashtanga yoga has never been about achieving the “perfect” pose or seeking external approval. It’s an inward journey - a practice that supports physical, mental and emotional wellbeing while cultivating strength, resilience and peace.

There is nothing to prove.
Nothing to compare.
Nothing to achieve.

Just breath.
Movement.
Presence.

The more we practice, the less it’s about what the body can do and the more it’s about how we feel, how we respond to life, and the peace we create within ourselves ☺️
