Do you ever finish the day feeling like you have done nothing… even though you have barely stopped? πŸ€”πŸ€”

That feeling can be so frustrating....

You look at the list, see all the things still waiting, and suddenly your brain ignores everything you actually managed to do.

βœ”οΈ The jobs you finished.
βœ”οΈ The decisions you made.
βœ”οΈ The messages you answered.
βœ”οΈ The little steps you took.
βœ”οΈ The things you handled that were not even on the original list.

This is why I love having a GOT DONE list.

Because sometimes we need visible proof that we are making progress.

Not because everything is finished.

Not because the list has magically disappeared.

But because you are allowed to recognise what you *have* done, instead of only beating yourself up for what is still left.

You can only get done what you can get done!

And some days, noticing that is exactly the mindset shift you need.

When you write your to-do list, where do **you** appear on it?

For many of us, the answer is somewhere near the bottom......

πŸ€” After the work is finished.
πŸ€” After everyone else has what they need.
πŸ€” After the emails, housework, appointments, family commitments and endless little jobs have been dealt with.

*Then* we'll look after ourselves.

Except the list never really ends does it? Theres always something else to do....

Putting yourself higher on that list doesn't mean ignoring your responsibilities or spending hours on elaborate self-care routines.

πŸ₯ͺ It might mean taking a proper lunch break.
πŸšΆπŸ»β€β™€οΈ Going for a walk.
πŸ‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Protecting half an hour to exercise.
😴 Getting enough sleep.
🍡 Sitting down with a cup of tea without trying to complete three other jobs at the same time.

Because you are the person trying to do everything else on that list.

If you constantly put your own energy and wellbeing last, eventually everything becomes harder.

You don't have to earn the right to look after yourself by finishing everything else first.

So, look at your plans for this week and ask yourself: "where have I actually put me?"

πŸ’¬πŸ’¬ Choose one thing you can do this week to move yourself a little higher up your own list, and let me know what it is in the comments to inspire others. πŸ‘‡

🚨🚨 Stop managing time!!

Start managing these three things instead. πŸ’ͺ🏻

If you are tired, overwhelmed, distracted, and running on empty, another colour-coded calendar probably is not going to fix the problem.

Because time is not really the thing you are managing.

⚑ Your energy matters.
πŸ”Ž Your focus matters.
βœ”οΈ Your consistency matters.

If your energy is low because you have not rested, everything feels harder.

If your focus is being pulled in ten directions by messages, notifications, and interruptions, you cannot give anything your best attention.

And if you keep stopping, starting, crashing, and restarting, it becomes very difficult to build momentum.

Time works better when you work better.

βœ–οΈ Not by pushing harder.

But by learning how to protect your energy, direct your focus, and build consistency in a way that actually fits your life. πŸ’ͺ🏻

Have you ever tried to stop a bad habit, only to find yourself slipping straight back into it?

There's a popular maxim ("a short, memorable saying that gives a basic rule for behavior or expresses a general truth") that says:

"The truth is, you don't break a bad habit; you replace it with a good one."

And that's an important distinction, as well as a good piece of information!!

When we focus entirely on *stopping* a habit, we leave a gap.

βœ–οΈ Stop reaching for your phone when you're bored.
βœ–οΈ Stop snacking when you're stressed.
βœ–οΈ Stop procrastinating when something feels difficult.
βœ–οΈ Stop checking your emails every five minutes.

But your old habit was probably doing something for you... And you've now created a gap that something needs to fill.........

It might have been giving you a distraction, comfort, stimulation or an escape from something you didn't want to deal with.

Simply removing the behaviour doesn't remove that need.

That's why it can be much easier to ask:

πŸ€” What could I do instead?

Perhaps you take a short walk when you need a break.
Pick up a book instead of your phone.
Spend five minutes starting the task you've been avoiding.
Pause for a cup of tea rather than automatically reaching for a snack.

You're not leaving an empty space and hoping willpower will fill it. You're deliberately creating a new response. πŸ’ͺ🏻

Tomorrow's new blog and podcast, "Habit Substitution: How to Replace Bad Habits", will explore how understanding your triggers and the needs behind your habits can help you find replacements that actually work.

What's one habit you could stop trying to *break* and start trying to *replace*?

πŸ’¬ Let me know in the comments. πŸ‘‡
