Great morning session with Josh and Rich today.

We worked on methods of closing the distance and footwork drills, mainly Biu Ma — the thrusting or darting stance.

Biu Ma allows us to move forwards while keeping the body connected, the centreline covered and the hands ready to work. It is not simply about getting closer. It is about arriving with structure, balance and control.

We also worked on Chi Sau, using contact and sensitivity to put those ideas into practice.

Good work from both of them this morning.

THE GATES ARE OPEN
This year, the Rob Ley Academy Annual Chi Sau Competition is being opened to adult practitioners from all Ving Tsun and Wing Chun schools and lineages.

This is not a challenge between schools or a comparison of lineages. It is an opportunity to meet fellow practitioners, test our structure, sensitivity, centreline control, balance, timing and composure, and enjoy a respectful day of Ving Tsun together.

One Adult Open Chi Sau Division — Ages 18+
There will be no separate weight, grade or experience categories. Everyone will compete under the same published rules, with excessive force, uncontrolled techniques and poor conduct penalised.

Date: Saturday 5 December 2026
Competitor sign-in: 9.30am
Competition starts: 10am
Venue: Rob Ley Academy, Unit 9A, Long Rock Industrial Estate, Long Rock, Penzance, Cornwall TR20 8HX
Entry: £10 per competitor, contributing towards the prizes
Registration closes: Sunday 15 November 2026

Awards will include:

• Open Chi Sau Champion
• Best Technical Performance
• Spirit of Chi Sau

After the competition, we will continue with friendly Chi Sau, shared training and conversation. We will finish the day with an optional Chinese meal together.

This will be a closed-door martial arts event, not a public spectator event. Attendance is limited to registered competitors and instructors or members of participating academies. Independent adult practitioners are also welcome to register as competitors.

No politics. No ego. No lineage rivalry.

All schools. All lineages. One respectful floor.

To receive the competition rules and register, please send me or the Rob Ley Academy a direct message.

Please share this invitation with your Sifu, instructor or school.

Yesterday, my French team were in Angoulême representing authentic Ip Man Ving Tsun.

It is always good to see the Rob Ley Academy represented in France by people who are committed to training properly and passing on the system with respect for its structure, principles and lineage.

Ving Tsun is not preserved simply by talking about lineage. It has to be trained, understood and passed from person to person with care.

Proud of the work the team continues to put in.

At the Bruce Lee UK Event 2026 at the Genesis Cinema in London today.

It was especially good to catch up with my long-time friend Lamar Davis, a Jeet Kune Do instructor who had flown over from the States for the event.

It was a great event with some great people. The documentaries were excellent and included plenty of information and stories about Bruce Lee that I had never heard before.

However long you have been involved in martial arts, there is always more history to discover and something new to learn. I came away very glad that I had made the trip.

An old picture at the Ving Tsun Athletic Association in Hong Kong. I’m in the middle of the back row.

In the front row, from left to right, are three students of Ip Man: Sisuk Mok Ho Ching, Ip Ching and my Sifu, Grandmaster Roland Tong.

It is always a privilege to spend time at the VTAA with people from that generation of Ving Tsun. Photographs like this remind me that lineage is not simply a list of names. It is carried through people, training and the knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

My own lineage runs through my Sifu, Grandmaster Roland Tong, directly to Ip Man. I remain grateful for everything my Sifu taught me and for the responsibility of passing it on correctly.

A look around Tuesday night’s class at the Kwoon.
Different students working on different parts of their Ving Tsun forms, handsets, Chi Sau and other partner drills.
A class does not always need everyone doing the same exercise at the same time. Each student has particular details that need attention, whether that is their stance, elbow position, centreline, structure, timing or pressure.
Nothing flashy. Just steady training, plenty of repetition and students helping one another to improve.
What part of your own training are you working on at the moment?

Teaching at the 2026 Ving Tsun Training Retreat.

A retreat gives us time to work without rushing. While everyone trains, I can move around, watch what is happening and make the small corrections that matter—stance, elbow position, centreline, structure and pressure.

Most improvements do not come from adding something clever. They come from removing unnecessary tension, rooting the Ma (stance) and repeating it until it begins to hold up naturally.

That is one of the reasons I enjoy these retreats. We have time to train, correct the details and then return to them again.

No shortcuts. Just patient work and plenty of repetition.

At the weekend I organised a day out for the Rob Ley Academy students at Adrenalin Quarry near Liskeard, Cornwall.

The day included karting on the 800-metre all-weather track, the Aquapark obstacle course and The Zip. We then finished the evening with a meal together at a Chinese restaurant.

No Ving Tsun or Chi Sau for the day—just a chance to have a good laugh and spend some time together away from the Kwoon. Training is important, but so is the friendship and sense of family that develops around it.

A great day with a good group of people. A few tired bodies by the end of it, though.

Several years ago at the Ving Tsun Athletic Association in Hong Kong with Sisuk Lee Wai Chi, a student of Ip Man.

It is always good to spend time with people from an earlier generation of Ving Tsun. You listen, ask questions and keep learning.

Lineage tells us where the system came from, but the work still has to be done in the Kwoon—developing structure, centreline control and sensitivity through Chi Sau.

Out at Geevor Tin Mine the other day, practising a little balance above the Cornish coast.

Ving Tsun kicking depends on the whole body, not just the kicking leg. The standing leg has to support your structure, while the body stays controlled so you can put the foot down again without losing your balance or position.

Holding the kick for a while is a simple way of testing that. Speed can hide a wobble. Staying there for a while cannot.

The view was excellent. The Cornish wind was less helpful.

Do you practise your kicks slowly as well as at speed?
