Greener Peebles

JOIN US on Saturday 5th September from 10am, for a See Me walk through Victoria Park.

We will meet at the Greener Peebles Community Garden at 10am, for a chat, light refreshments, and a chance to explore the community garden. Then a gentle walk (level ground) around the park. Join our community event, bringing people together to walk and talk about mental health.

The idea is simple; people to come together in an outside space and are invited to pair up to walk for about 30 minutes, while sharing stories and opinions about mental health. We aim to tackle the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health conditions.

Andy's Man Club and the Recovery Cafe will be in attendance. Along with a first viewing of the memorial quilt, which is being created locally, to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have died by su***de.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our Pick Your Own event last week! Bags were filled with beetroot, onions, potatoes, chard, runner beans, French beans, rocket, kale, cucumber and herbs. Dinner winners all round! Thanks also to our volunteers who helped out at the event.

This week our gardening volunteers continued with some mega weeding and finished planting out the swede, as well as some compost heap and cucumber and squash plant maintenance. A visit to the RePollinate Bee Bed is the perfect way to take some time out during the session or on which to finish it - the bees, absorbed in their nectar drinking, are great subjects for 'papping' - all pollinators are garden celebrities in our opinion! 🐝🌺🧅

The Green Wanderers meet fortnightly for activities, which includes a monthly group session in our community garden for growing and nature activities. Hi everyone, here's our latest Seasonal Summary - find out what's been happening at the Greener Peebles community garden in the last few months, and what's coming up! 🙂🦋🫛

For some of us it was Yurt Care day today with help and guidance from Moggie's Yurts and our top notch volunteers! The canvas was repaired and reattached, the broken parts of the wooden lattice walls mended, and the layers of fabric around the window sown together with a blanket stitch. A beautiful Walnut Orb Weaver spider came out to comment quietly about being disturbed. Meanwhile, the gardening continued, with some pre-session strimming, 'cool' crops - lettuce, coriander, calabrese - sown for overwintering in our polycarbonate tunnel, squashes and tomatoes pruned, and the wildlife water basins cleaned out and refilled. This year may go down as Year of the Cucumber - there's no sign of production slowing yet! The first red pepper made an appearance, and aubergines and climbing beans made up an abundant harvest.

🦋 Marvellous Moths 🦋

We were delighted and excited to welcome John Woolliams, volunteer with Butterfly Conservation, to the garden this week, as we've been really keen to learn more about these precious pollinators, as well as to get an idea how they're fairing in the community garden. John set up 3 light traps overnight and gave us a wee talk the next day, while we had a chance to view some of the moths that had been caught.

We ran (or flew!) with the theme all week, with Grow Kids also getting in on the action and decorating their own moth finger puppets to fly around the garden to drink nectar from all the different coloured flowers. Aren't they wonderful!

23 different species were caught in the light traps, some of our favourites - aka 'top moffs' - were the Canary Shouldered Thorn, Golden Y, and the July High Flyer.

We're feeling more encouraged than ever to continue gardening in ways to support these often overlooked creatures through these perilous times of climate crisis 🐛🌿
