Maybe I'm just getting older but sometimes I wonder if we’ll still get those really BIG sporting moments.
The ones where you remember where you were.
Ireland beating Italy in 94 and again 2016
Robbie Keane equalising against Germany in 2002.
Tyrone winning their first All-Ireland.
Ronan O’Gara’s drop goal to win the Grand Slam.
Katie Taylor winning Olympic gold.
Those moments that seemed to stop the whole country.
Sport feels different now. Everything is instant. There’s always another highlight, story or celebrity fighting for our attention.
Sometimes I wonder if we’ll ever get those moments again.
And then Katie Taylor walks out in front of 80,000+ people at Croke Park.
Yep.
This is one of them.
And as a dad of two girls, there was something even more special about it.
Katie started boxing when girls weren’t officially allowed to compete in Ireland. As a kid, she had to pretend to be a boy just to get into the ring.
Decades later after Olympic gold, world titles, wins, losses and setbacks she finishes her career headlining a packed Croke Park.
The first boxer to headline there since Muhammad Ali.
A girl who once had to pretend to be a boy to get a fight ended up bringing boxing back to Croke Park.
That’s some story.
And throughout it all, she just kept showing up and doing the work.
Because we see the Croke Park moments.
The medals. The titles. The big nights.
We don’t see the thousands of fairly boring days that created them.
Health and fitness is no different.
Most weeks will actually be fairly boring.
Get your sessions done.
Go for a walk or a run.
Make a decent dinner.
Get back on track after a bad week — or just a busy one.
Do it again.
And again.
And again.
There aren’t many Croke Park moments.
There’s just a lot of work that eventually creates them.
And guess who’s been doing the boring stuff for decades?
Katie Taylor.
Pretty much since she was ten years of age.
We got to see the Croke Park moment.
But it was all those ordinary days beforehand that made it possible.
What a career. What a role model.
