🎾 Funday 2026 🎾
Sunday, August 16th was a big day for junior tennis in Oban, with Atlantis Leisure Centre taken over by juniors and their families enjoying challenges, competitions and the chance to try out some new activities.
Throughout the day, juniors and adults took part in a range of activities in the hall, including timed challenges, rallying competitions and target games. There were some excellent performances, including Charlie Jameson, the only person to complete the Fan Drill in under 16 seconds, and George Budgen, who managed an impressive 5 out of 5 in the target competition.
And for the parents who took on the bonus challenges—you’ll be pleased to know that none of the videos of you waddling around with a squishy ball between your knees worked! 😁
The new rebound wall was set up in the multisport area and proved a great hit (pun intended!). The squash courts were busy throughout the day, while many parents and children also had the opportunity to try pickleball for the first time.
But the big event of the day was the Primary and Secondary tennis competitions. While the weather wasn’t playing ball, the competition certainly was!
The Primary Consolation Final was contested by Matthew Bruce and Hugh Smith, with Matthew taking the win. In the Primary Main Final, Finlay MacInnes beat Corran Wood 4–2 to take the title. A sucker for punishment, Finlay also entered the Secondary competition—but was eventually knocked out by the eventual winner!
Congratulations to Mary Blomfield, who won the Secondary Consolation Final against Sorren MacGregor. Mary’s powerful forehands proved decisive, particularly with the heavy, damp balls.
The Secondary Main Final was between Torin Freytag and Annan Anderson. The assembled crowd were treated to some excellent tennis, particularly Annan’s strong returns against Torin’s much-improved serve. After a 30-minute battle featuring some extremely long rallies, Torin prevailed to win 4-2 4-2 and collect the trophy for the second year running.
Junior tennis organisers Peter Strange and Colin Millar said:
“We had another great day in our junior tennis programme, with over 40 children and their parents enjoying fun activities at Atlantis during the day."
“Thanks to Atlantis for making the facilities available to us, and to Summer of Sport 2026 for funding the rebound wall and enabling free ‘Whacking Wednesday’ sessions during the school holidays."
“Thanks also to all the volunteers - Pete, Mary, Torin, Annan, Elaine, Bob, Max, Fergus, Rose and Aileen - who helped make our school holiday wrap-up Funday such a success."
“Thanks to all the juniors for their enthusiasm for the sport and a special thanks to all the parents who bring their kids along to Atlantis for our events. We love bringing tennis to so many juniors in Oban and the surrounding area.”
The event was a great end for the holidays, Summer of Sport 2026 and Whacking Wednesdays, but Smashing Sundays continue till the end of September.

Big week coming up for Junior Tennis! 🎾

This is the last full week of the school holidays. Parents/carers, are you looking forward to getting the kids back to school, or are you going to miss having them around all day? No need to answer! 😊

Being the last week means that this Wednesday (tomorrow) is our final Whacking Wednesday ☹️. The weather is looking OK, so fingers crossed it stays that way!

And, of course, this Sunday is our annual Funday! 🎉

We’ll be in the hall from 10 am to 2 pm, with challenges for both juniors and adults. Also, everyone can have a go at squash, pickleball and short tennis. And let’s not forget the sweets - for the kids only, just to be clear! 😁

And the best bit? It’s all free!

Come along and invite anyone and everyone you think would enjoy it. The more the merrier! Come when you want, but to help reduce congestion early on, think about coming later rather than earlier.

But wait… there’s more!

Out on the courts on Sunday, we’ll also be running tennis competitions for Primary and Secondary pupils:
• Primary: 10 am to 12 noon
• Secondary: 12 noon to 2 pm

To help us organise the competitions, we need entries before the event. Please email Peter before Saturday, at [email protected] to enter.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday! 🎾😊

🎾 2026 Summer of Sport Boost for Oban Tennis 🎾

Junior tennis in Oban has received a major boost thanks to three exciting developments linked to the 2026 Summer of Sport initiative, which aims to increase opportunities for children and young people aged 3 to 26 to take part in sport alongside the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Oban Tennis and Squash Club has successfully secured a Micro-Grant from the liveArgyll Summer of Sport Fund, enabling the club to purchase an inflatable practice tennis wall. The wall will provide players with an opportunity to practice independently, helping them develop consistency and confidence without needing a hitting partner.

Alongside the club’s regular Smashing Sunday junior tennis programme, which runs every Sunday from Easter until the end of September, the funding has also made it possible to introduce free Wednesday afternoon coaching sessions throughout the summer holidays. These additional sessions are open to all and provide even more opportunities for children and young people to play tennis during the school break.

The club also welcomed Anna Myatt, an LTA Level 5 coach from Tennis Scotland, to support its growing coaching programme. During her visit, Anna mentored the club’s new LTA Level 1 Assistants, led an additional junior coaching session based on the successful Smashing Sunday format, and delivered advanced coaching to several of the club’s senior players.

Junior tennis organisers Peter Strange and Colin Millar said:

“We’re delighted to see these exciting developments in our junior tennis programme. The practice wall will enable enthusiastic young players to develop consistent technique without the need for a partner, increasing both court use and opportunities to play.

“The club now has more than 80 registered junior players, with 30 – 40 children attending each week. Attendance increased by 65% between 2024 and 2025, and we’re already on track to increase numbers further this year.”

The club hopes that these developments will encourage even more young people in Oban and the surrounding area to pick up a racket and enjoy the many physical, social and mental health benefits that tennis provides.
